I think Napster might be the bes bet for me, too. Do you only pay $10 a month because you want to stream as well? I was thinking of putting Satellite radio in my car this spring so that I could get a better selection of stations WITH the ARTIST and SONG TITLE on the display. If I only had a penny for everytime I heard a song I liked and they never mention who or what.

Still be careful even though you don't share. They can and have tracked downloaders. It is just as easy for them to do as tracking who hosts the songs. I believe they have already started lawsuits with downloaders included.
I joined BMG music and it is a mixed blessing. I have been able to fill in some gaps with albums that I did not buy over the years but they have very little new stuff and even less music listed above.

Yes, I do like to stream the songs on Napster and listen before I buy the song. Sometimes the song may be great for 30 seconds, and then not so great for the duration of the song. I also have XM Satellite Radio in my car and it is a great way to get new music ideas. They have so many different stations with every kind of music you could imagine! I'm not so happy with how much money I am spending to get all this great music, but I guess I have to look at it as a hobby and something that I love to do. I get bored with my spinning CD's after I have used them 3 or 4 times, so I like to keep it fresh by always getting new music!

I understand the 30 second thing. Sometimes a song is not what it really is by only listening to a partial.
I think I will take the plunge and try XM or Sirrius.

I reluctantly signed up for Napster and I have to say it is totally awesome!! You might say that I am a music junkie and as CycleCat says you can call it a hobby but I am passionate about my music. They have a great selection and you can steam all day and night if you want. They are very user friendly and direct you to other artists based on what you play. They offer music reviews and bios on the artists. I do not think you will be sorry.

After the recommendations here I took a look at Napster today. I see they advertise their premium service for amonthly fee plus download fees yet they talk no where of just plain download fees for people who do not want to stream. I also read in a review limitations on how many hard drives you can copy a song too. Does anyone have any more info? So far I see their sight very poorly laid out with no info on it. This is the reason I have bypassed most online stores. If I buy a song. I want to move it around as I see fit. I get a new computer about every 6 months so limitations on where I can store hurts.

I've been using Rhapsody since it became available because my ancient computer runs Windows 98, so I can't install Napster. I have no complaints, but I suspect Napster may have more offerings. With Rhapsody, I burn the music I buy (.79 per song) directly onto a cd, and then I just rip it onto my hard drive and use it any way I want. I've found some really good stuff there, and I like the way they categorize the music by genre. Has anyone used both Rhapsody and Napster and know how they compare?

How to do the new Napster thing.....
Buy the song. Burn it to CD....Rip it back into whatever file you wish. Then it's yours. Extra step but avoids the restriction.
You can also buy multiple tracks for less than $.99.
Also...log onto the radio streams. there are different genres to listen to and names and titles to download and buy if you like.
Finally....for the last year I have been buying and selling CD's on half.com. You will save a lot of $ if all you do is buy a CD and rip it to your PC. Buy it....rip it....sell it back to someone else. The net cost for CD's ranges from $3.00 to $7.00 after buying and selling.

So let me see if I understand this. You download an mp3 and save it to audio disk which converts i tto cda format. Then you re-rip it back to mp3? That would cause a lot of sound quality loss since it is being compressed 2x. Help me here because this is my issue with these services. I want to avoid having a song that has been ripped twice. On my system I can tell the difference between mp3 at 192k and regular audio. So 128K or 128k done twice would be like listneing to AM radio LOL
I also wish they would just let me download songs without having to install software. I think we all have enough software on our computers without adding one for each service.

I don't know if they work together but it wouldn't surprise me! The free trials do let you download but I cannot remember if you are limited to a certain number of songs - my gut tells me (for what that's worth  ) that you can download as many as you want. See if they have a customer support number listed and just call - that way you won't have any surprises.

I guess you are right. It seems in these times I aways forget to look for a customer number since so few seem to have them.
All of thee music services are deficient in one way or another. Everytime I want to jumpat iTunes I remember that I must first burn the AAC file to a CD, then convert to mp3. This will introduce too much loss for my liking. Hopefully Napster or Rhapsody will be the answer.
Thanks

My ears are getting too old. I can't really hear that much sound loss from the direct download to burn to rip to burn. The real solution is an IPod, where you transfer the file and just play.
The amplitiers i work with are not state of the art equipment. they sound perfectly fine.

What I find ridiculous about some of these download sites is that they make you pay $10 a month just to be a member and then an extra .99 cents to download a song. IMHO you should pay the $10 a month to be a member and dowload songs for free or maybe .10 for each song. Afterall, they are already making $10 a month off of everyone who joins.

Spinmaniac -- Hi, Superfabulous is track #3 on BT's Emotional Technology CD, right before Somnambulist. My classes like Somnambulist, too.
Superfabulous is a little harder/edgier, has more 'attitude' and a heavier beat than Somnambulist. I've edited it to have two versions, my classes have liked both.
You'll also find track #1, Knowledge of Self, which was used on the ESPN show Playmakers.

SpinManiac -- Glad you liked those.
Yes, there are a number of "spin-able" tracks on the Tomb Raider CD. (I got lucky on that one; a class member brought me a copy; she thought there were some great songs on it).
Many instructors have said -- and I agree -- soundtracks are great sources of cycle music. I find myself at the theater sometimes paying more attention to the music in the film (and even the trailers) than I do watching the movie .... I think that's called an "occupational hazard" ?
(When I saw the trailer for "Unfaithful" a few years ago, I went on a search for the music to the trailer. Took me a week to find it, but the class response made the search worth every second).

Rented a copy of The Italian Job last night, I thought the majority of the music was awesome and spinnable. Anybody have the soundtrack? And have you used it in class?
Thanks Linda :D
For some seriously thrash-worthy alternative modern rock, this "Resident Evil" original motion picture soundtrack is loaded with usable tunes...
Slipknot- My Plague
M. Manson- The Fight Song
Coal Chamber- Something Told Me
Crystal Method- Name of the Game
Adema- Everyone
Fear Factory- Invisible Wounds
Static-X - Anything but This
Rammstein- Halleluja
Depeche Mode- Dirt
IllNino- What Comes Around
Mudvayne - Dig
Method Man- Release Yo'delf
Saliva - 800'
FivePointO- The Infinity
... plus a few excerpts from the Manson original score that are promising as well.
A few are a bit too harsh for my crowd, but if you have a group of 20-somethings who like the room to shake while they ITT, its a worthwhile investment.
I love soundtracks. This is a disc I could use "off the shelf" for my personal workouts, without skipping a track.

Had a couple lately:
Franz Ferdinand: "Take Me Out"
Los Lonely Boys: "Senorita"
Stabbing Westward: "What Do I Have To Do" (which starts quiet, great for cueing, then has some awesome guitar)
Gotta love the tunes.

Got a few for the rockers:
Breaking Benjamin: "Medicate", "Natural Life", "So Cold", "Follow Me", "Sooner or Later"
Breaking Point: "27", "Falling Down", "Coming of Age", "One of a Kind" (my personal favorite!)
Dust for Life: "Step Into the Light"
The Secret Machines: "Sad and Lonely" (very bluesy-rock song, if that makes sense)
Hope you rock lovers enjoy!

Here's a few off Rush's new "Feedback" CD I mentioned in another post. They're remakes of 60's-70's songs. I used some this morning and class loved them.
----------------------------
"Heart Full of Soul" - Rush (orig. Yardbirds)...good tempo changes
"Crossroads" - Rush (orig. Cream) .....a good 3 minutes or so of MOVIN'
"For What It's Worth" - Rush (orig. Buffalo Springfield)
.....this one worked really well. I used it for climbing passes. Medium seated climbing resistance during the verses...then PASSING other riders uphill on every chorus ("Stop, Hey...what's that sound...everybody look what's goin' down...") Single rider passes the first 4 times, then multiple passes as the chorus repeats to finish. IT ROCKED!
-----------------------------
I think I saw a few people burning insence (or something) in the back.

London Calling - Clash - Climbs
Barra Barra - BlackHawk Down Theme - Climbs
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns & Roses - Sprints
Ace of Spades - Motorhead - Sprints
Because We Can - Fatboy Slim Remix - Moulin Rouge - Sprints
Thunderbirds - Busted - Sprints
If you do find any great music - could you indicate what you think its good for ? Only I get to a stage where I think I need some new climbing or sprinting music, and I can't tell what a lot of tracks on here would be suitable for - great music - but until I get to listen to them - I can't tell where they fit.
Thanks !

What is "sprinting music"?
murphs
04-01-2005, 08:35 PM
My guess is it means music to sprint to.
My guess is it means music to sprint to.
So...explain to me how you instruct a "sprint" and how it's choreographed to a song?
murphs
04-02-2005, 02:32 AM
Personally I don't use the term "sprint," but I often have my students increase cadence -- sometimes I call this "adding speed" -- with changes in the music.
Patrick
04-02-2005, 10:39 AM
I've heard my students joking about certain catch phrases certain instructors "always" use so I try to rotate my Spinning clichés. I should make a chart but I'm not that clever or anal. Lately, I've been using "accelerations" in lieu of "sprints," as in "the next track is 3 minutes long and we will do 3 accelerations of 20 seconds each."
cougie
04-04-2005, 12:13 PM
Oops - my non-spinning cert showed me up.
I like to choose some fast beat music to do sets of say 20 seconds of 'accelerations'. I think you guys would call it something like the anaerobic Interval Energy Zone ? (bit of a mouthful).
Patrick
04-05-2005, 01:32 AM
While I think there EZs are pretty clever. I frankly don't speak them outloud to my class even though I use EZ theory when planning the profile. I generally lead the class using the Borg 10 point scale, HR and VT.

Paul van Dyk! Progressive House Dance Music!
I hadn't taught a 45 minute class in two years and just accepted a a 75 minute Spin+Core+Stretch class. Rather than skip a track here and there to reduce the length of my current (and I think better) 60 minute CDs, I pulled out my old my 45 minute CDs and rediscovered Paul van Dyk (I lost most of my music library in a crash). I forgot how much I love his music.

I'm in rock heaven. Theory of a Deadman's newest CD, Gasoline, was released almost 2 weeks ago & I've worn the grooves out on it. So many spin-worthy songs, it's hard to choose just one. "No Surprise", "No Way Out" and "Hating Hollywood" have some awesome beats. Also lots of ballads for cool downs or seated climbs.
If you like rock, check them out! Definitely different than their 1st CD, but well worth the listen.

I agree! I found a couple of remixes and purchased one- the Junior Jack "Rock 'Da House' Club Mix- but I don't like it nearly as much as the original song. I'd love an extended version that stays truer to the original.

East Village Opera Company.
Totally awesome, rocked out classical tunes. A friend turned me on to them, and I love their CD. Even if you don't like classical or opera musica (and I usually hate opera), you are going to love these arrangements. They lend themselves very well to spin.

YES! I got the disc on iTunes and fell in love with it immediately. So....made a ride for my class mixed with some rock tunes as well and they loved it. I was lucky enough to have checked their web site in time to find out that they were playing in LA a couple of weeks ago and went to see them in person. Totally awewome!

Some new...some not-so-new...that I recently started using. The Killers are awesome! I downloaded a few...then went out and bought the whole album. Kind of like a mix between old U2 & INXS with a little Duran Duran and The Cure thrown in somehow. I've been listening to an "Alternative Hits" online radio station for ideas. Radio 4 is pretty cool.
JENNY WAS A FRIEND OF MINE - The Killers
SOMEBODY TOLD ME - The Killers
MIDNIGHT SHOW - The Killers
WAS - Kenny Wayne Shepherd
THE CHEMICALS BETWEEN US - Bush
BULLET PROOF SKIN - Institute (former Bush singer/guitarist)
FUTURES - Jimmy Eat World
SUNDAY - Lo Pro
MOLLY'S CHAMBERS - Kings of Leon (VW Jetta commercial)
SELL OUT - Reel Big Fish (ska)
NEVER GONNA STOP - Rob Zombie
FEEL SO NUMB - Rob Zombie
LIPSTICK & BRUISES - Lit
BANG THEORY - World Leader Pretend
PRETTY VEGAS - INXS (new guy sounds just like Michael Hutchins)
PARTY CRASHERS - Radio 4
DISMISS THE SOUND - Radio 4
TRANSMISSION - Radio 4
THE DEATH OF AMERICAN RADIO - Radio 4
BIGTIME - Soundtrack of Our Lives
CRAZY - Alanis Morissette (Seal remake...avoid the dance versions)
DOA - Foo Fighters

Voicedude is aka DJ Joel Steven - here is his website
http://voicedude.multiply.com/music
To download, you have to join a networking site called Multiply. It took just a few minutes to sign up and you can download from there. It seems pretty safe and I did not have any problems downloading.
I also like his Party Starter mash up.
Let me know if you have any trouble with the site.

Thanks on the avatar - courtesy of Rick!
Squirrel is a perfect metaphor - very innocent looking one minute and mischievous the next.
Sorry about the garbage - after seeing the flying squirrel video, I think I will let someone else do the dirty work.
As for Pink's furniture. . . . I overheard Mr. Pink say he wanted new stuff, so I dug right in :)

Just found this one this week due to my inability to watch a movie without listening to the soundtrack.
Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest.
Some great tunes here. An opportunity for you to orchestral instrumentation without crossing too far into classical music.
Bought it at Best Buy and got two "exclusive" remixes.

so what was the song?? :D
I myself have discovered a couple tunes over the years at restaurants. Our Chili's has some pretty eclectic music they play. But it gets kind of noisy in there sometimes, and I remember once trying to listen to a song playing, hoping I could hear enough of it to go home and search for it. It was so hard to hear the speakers that I began to get up on my knees in the booth to "hear" up toward the speakers!!
My DH said to me, "sit down, you're nuts, and you're embarrasing me!"
Shannon, I'm envious of your DH's compassion, support and enabling of your music addiction. :P

I can't remember or was it because I was on my second margarita (just kidding). It was cool song but I didn't want to ask the waiter for the name of it. I just think it's funny how he listens to music the same way I do.

I just grabbed the whole Kidjo album based on this recommendation and a quick listen on itunes, and it is really good, there is a lot of use-able stuff here. But the song Lonlon (which is an acapella version of Ravel's Bolero) is going to make a phenomenal climb. This song is just interesting on so many levels, I'm very impressed.

Markus Schulz -- Sorrow Has No Home -- I remembered enough of these lyrics during a ride with Michael Ferrante tonight to google it and find it. He used it as the final flat with a sprint at the end of the ride. Just tremendous feeling here.

Hi.
I just found out about this forum. I've been teaching SPIN for about 1 year and only have about 20 CDs so far.
1) Where do you find these songs? I use Rhapsody (I know it is limited in it's offerings, but the interface is great at finding other music).
2) How can you spend so much money on downloads? How much is spent in a year. I didn't have enough to use for itemized deductions on income tax, but shutter to think of spending more money on songs you use a couple of times every so often.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Blackdog, consider getting in on a CD tree with people from this forum. Go to the home page and there is a section for CD Tree's, it's where you make a cd full of songs and make copies to (say 10 people) and in return you get 10 different cds back.
I use itunes (I know, it's expensive, but hey it's not as expensive and wasteful as years ago buying an entire cd for maybe 3 good songs for class!). I also try to find songs that aren't real "pop" or recognizable, that way they seem to get more life out of them.

Andorra - Caribou (This is the whole album) - Not all for Spin....really eclectic alternative music...nice 60's-70's sound with the a updated twist. (ITunes)
Two clients of mine are into drumming and asked me to make them a cd of some of some of the music they sometimes hear in my classes (safri duo etc)...this made me dig up / look through my music...and refound two of my favorites:
Healing with Tumeric and Eik Din III (Dhol Foundation) they work well together, back to back either way!
Really liking "Myriad Harbour" off of The New Pornographer's new CD (Challengers). Fun.

I just acquired 3 tunes off of Stephane Pompougnac's 'Hello Mademoiselle' CD. The 30" clip sounded good to me, cross your fingers, I'll report back once I listen to it in full.
-Sorry
-Last Night
-On the Road Again (cover of the Canned Heat tune)
kszspin

After listening to them, I love, really love 'Last Night' the best. Better than the 30" clip on itunes for sure. Next I like 'On the Road Again', they used Canned Heat's vocals, but put in really interesting layers of instruments. Kinda of like RL Burnside meets Hotel Costes.
'Sorry' is a more laid back tune with stand out guitar and violin. I hear a slow climb up a hill or recovery on a flat.

Speaking of cool rock covers....I just found a head banger cover of the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby', by Eddie Ojeda. He was in Twisted Sister. Actually other songs on the cd sound pretty good, like the title track 'Axes 2 Axes'. That song sounds alot like Joe Satriani stuff.
Normally I don't lean toward head banger stuff, but this was intriguing. :)
Now I'm on a fun search for more rock covers....thanks Haze!

I use my check card Visa all the time. It's probably safer because the bank guarentees $50 against fraud. I have probably spent about $300 over the last 2 years on gomusic.ru, which was mp3music.ru prior to that. Worst thing was 10 cents going to 15 cents going to 19 cents.
You should preview songs on other sites like Napster, ITunes, then if the track is on GoMusic, you buy it there. 50% of my purchases become full albums, so another 10% off.
I'm going to mention again, for the uninitiated, Replay Music software. Replay records from your sound card and converts realtime into mp3 files. So, if you bought one of the download services, you download, record and you have unlimited music for $9.99 or $14.99 a month.
Supplemented with gomusic, you get the absolute most for the money. Napster has almost a parallel selection to ITunes.
Spend less...get more.

Just stumbled upon Dick Dale, the King of the Surf Guitar. His CDs Tribal Thunder and Unknown Territory are really hot. Check them out.
Ahhhh Dick. DH and I went to see him play at a local place about 8 years ago. Got his autograph and spoke with him. What a cool guy. Down to earth. DH and I have been a fan for years. "Unknown Territory" and "Tribal Thunder" are two of his best works (good recommendations, Bob). While some of his stuff may be too high RPMs for spinning, if you pick and choose wisely, you can find some a$$ kickin' stuff good for seated flats 90-110 RPMs. Frantic and eclectic blood-pumpin' music.

Just put this in AC's music moratorium thread, but if you're not following that...
If you can, check out U2's The Joshua Tree rerelease for the 20th anniversary of the original. There are some "previously unreleased" tunes, which, while they sound wholly unfinished and not up to par for them, are kind of interesting, namely Wave of Sorrow and Desert of Our Love, both of which might make good climbs. Both are on iTunes.

Can someone tell me which new Springsteen tracks are in heavy radio rotation? I just got around to hearing the new CD and I really love Girls in Their Summer Clothes. Is it heard every 5 minutes on the radio?

Is my newest Springsteen fav...
I've been working in "I'll Work for your Love" and "Last to Die" and "Terry's song".
I haven't heard any Springsteen on the radio west of the Mississippi--it might help if I turned off my IPOD once in a while tho.
For other Rock --Killers--Sawdust is pretty good. All I have used so far is Romeo and Juliet--one of my all time favorite songs, but the whole CD is pretty IDC friendly.
Foo Fighters new one (But Honestly, Cheer up boys, Long Road to Ruin)
Puddle of Mudd (watch out for the F-bombs) Famous--Merry Go Round, Thinking bout you, Radiate. Those are the safe ones. I only have the album version of Famous so it is loaded with f-bombs--get the radio edit of this one if you need it.
"Go Green World" --(Carmen Rizzo Remix)--6:08---Annie Lennox and others..

Agreed, I used Romeo & Juliet & Shadowplay tonight.

Being in NJ.. some in my classes expect Bruce numerous times in EVERY class (no, they don't get it). I try to put in some off the beaten path tracks and only use a couple of the more popular ones. I have not felt many spinning vibes from the Magic CD.. yet.. Even the live versions of the songs are so-so. Some good finds are on the Seeger Sessions Cd's (studio and live). Below are some that work for my students. LEt me know if you need nay help finding them.
Radio Nowhere was the first release. Works OK in Spinning
Girl .. Summer Clothes I believe is the newer single. Works OK in Spinning
Try Devil's Arcade. It builds greatly.
If you want some fun Bruce juice (maybe a bit different from your average bruce stuff) try:
Better Days - flat
This Hard land - flat
Badlands (live 75-85) - always a treat
Into the Fire (Rising) - ok, this has ome across as one of the most inspirational songs to my students (May your strength give us strength, May your faith give us faith, May your hope give us hope, May your love give us love) seated climb into standing climb on chorus
The Rising - of course
Now some more obscure ones
Jacob's ladder from BBC - repetitive, but strong.. (Every rung goes higher and higher, Every new rung just, just makes us stronger, We are brothers, sisters, and all )
American Land (live MSG) - another Seeger sessions band one
land of Hope and Dreams - great finish climb
This Little Light of Mine - what a great fast track
Racing in the Street (live 75-85) - might feel a bit slow.. but wait til it builds at the end) WOW!
57 Channels and nothing on (remix). JOH
From Small things - great jump song
My 2 favorite Bruce songs for Spin are "Murder Incorporated" and "Rosalita". Seconds are Tunnel Of Love, I Came For you, and Jungleland, which is the most poetic of all of his songs, even today.

WXPN out of Philadelphia runs a daily free download on one of its listener blogs. (http://wxpn.blogspot.com/)You can often find some new obscure music to share with your riders and tweak some interest in the local music scene at the same time.
Recent artists: My Bedroom Eyes, The Swimmers, Feist, Big Head Todd and the Monsters just to name a few.

I heard this at a Christmas concert this weekend. It's an African holiday song and I have NO IDEA where to find it but if you can look for it, it's "Betelehemu". If you like a good percussive song with huge energy, this is for you. It brought the house down amongst all the other holiday stuff.
ETA: since you don't know what they're singing, you could use this year round. I wouldn't have known it was a holiday song if they hadn't told me.

I saw it performed by a local chorus, so it was their version. I won't have ITunes for another week at home (I'm at work only now) so I can't hear them myself. Do any of them sound kind of like tribal percussion? I'd say it was like 6 minutes long and started like Drippy slow and quiet, with pieces being added as they went along, and the last part was pretty intense.

Thanks Amy. I think I found a version that sounds like what you've described. It's by Timothy Seelig & Turtle Creek Chorale and it's 5 min 22 sec long. I downloaded it--am listening to it right now! The percussion has just started picking up--what a great climbing song! Thanks so much for this! Very beautiful and moving (and gets you legs moving to!) :)

I took a class yesterday (yay!) and the instructor used a couple I liked:
Spellbound - Siouxie and the Banshees (chorus is "Spinning, you have no choice") -- nice tempo flat, sprints runs...whatever
Now this one I can't find yet, but I loved: Jonathan Kane - "I Looked at the Sun". It was 13:57 and we did a tempo climb to it. All instrumental but not annoyingly repetitive. If anyone finds it, I'd love to know where it is!(I've tried iTunes, Limewire and GoMusic)
