Hi Chi-town Spin,
I saw tonight's episode too. I teach tomorrow night and I too will probably get plenty of questions form women about getting bulky legs from spinning. From all the research and learnings I've had , it's to my understanding that the opposite is true. There are too many repititons in spinning for a woman's legs to bulk up. Yes, her legs will get shape and toned, but not bulky unless she is genetically predisposed to it. My legs have actually become smaller since I started spinning, nothing else has changed in my routine. I get plenty of compliments on my shapely and toned legs.

Well I'm a certified personal trainer too. We are taught that low reps and high intensity is what causes hypertrophy (bigger muscles). That is NOT cycling, no matter how much resistance you're pushing. But yes, if your body is made to make muscle, using them will make them grow.
The painfully obvious solution is this: When your muscles get big enough for you, do something else.
So there. :)

I love the look of "bulky", well-defined legs. I tell my riders that muscle is more productive in terms of metabolic burn, so go don't be afraid to add some. My experience as a recreational body builder is that it's very hard to build muscle, especially if you're not predisposed to do so. I envy anyone who can build muscle easily.

I'm so glad I read this post before teaching my class today. Thanks for mentioning it Chi-Town. I was hammered with questions, but most everyone agreed that spinning is a great way to get in shape. Then they had the pleasure of a challenging strength ride . . .
