In 2006 or 2007 (depending on how it is going to be organized) there is another possibility to ride Paris-Brest-Paris (1200 km non-stop race).
This is a truly long distance classic. History goes back to So JGSI all over the world to put up a trainingprogram in your centre for indoors and outdoors to prepare ourselves for this classic race.
Let's meet in 2006 or 2007 in Paris, ride to Brest, ride back to Paris (and then fly to Antibes to recover at Fethi's place, or Mark T's apartment in the Alpes).
It's not about copying Johnny but to experience and explore where the origin came from (sometimes there are some fuzzy things happening around the program).
calculation for al small team with paceline power: 4 hrs a 30 km/h+2 hrs sleep: 1200 km/120 x 6 = 60-80 hours, so only 3 or four days!!
keep on riding.

history goes back to 1891, so older than the Tour de France (in fact when organising the first Tour, Desgranges wanted to outshine Paris-Brest-Paris)

Oooof - that sounds brutal - 100 mile TT's I can do - but that's enough for me. Until I can retire and get lots more miles in !
Good idea though !

Why wait until 2007?
There are three 1200 km alternatives available in North America this year:
Boston-Montreal-Boston

The Colorado Last Chance http://www.rmccrides.com/brevet2004lastchance.htm

Sounds brutal indeed but absolutely amazing and 2007 leaves just about enough time to train! Does anyone know how you qualify to get in? I guess you have to do a certain number of brevets of varying distances? Has anyone done the ride before? Any ideas for a training programme both outside on the bike and inside in special spinning training rides would be great.
And again, thanks for the site.

To qualify for PBP, or just about any other 1200k event, you must complete the following events within the time limit specified
200k in 13h30m
300k in 20h
400k in 27h
600k in 40h
The events must be sanctioned by the Audax Club Parisien (the host club for PBP) and they must be completed in ascending order. You must complete the 200, before the 300, etc. However, I think it's possible to substitute a longer distance for a shorter one. For example, if you completed a 200k and then missed the 300k, you can do two 400k then the 600k and still qualify. These events must also be completed in the same year PBP is held.

Legspeed, it looks like you're definitely one for PBP. reason for me to wait (and now i understand you ask why wait until 2006-2007) it is gonna be my first long distance ride (until know only luik-bastenaken-luik and la marmotte) and i need the time to train. Thanks, saw your links for endurancerides in the States, they look great!! First PBP for me though.
Brusselspin, I will dig up more relevant info about PBP, lets keep in touch about it (can I sent you Dutch info??). Marc Reuland also wants to join, and this week I will sent an email out to some others.

Hey Gerard, glad to read you on the forum, hope everything is well. Listnen, I talked with my bike-mate about this and she would love to join also. She is in my spinning-class but is not JGSI. Whatis you idea? Can everyone join or just instructors? For me it would be great to have her come because then we can train together. If not thats cool I'll just make her do the phase1. You already have ideas about how to use spinning for this like start with the 12 hours and build up?
Let me know if you need help organising. Or ideas.
Hello Clarien
Of course everyone can join. Hope we all ride in a Spinningshirt in 2007.
Haven't got a plan yet, the idea is still pretty rough. Next few weeks I will trie to get the word out a bit more (direct email etc. etc.). I can't get access to spinning.nu for some time, hope they didn't kick me out, maybe Alain allows us to make a big announcement on their site.
Maybe we can organize an evening with some guys who are expereinced long distance cyclists (or even Adri van Diemen and his site) to make a trainingsplan. In winter we can organize maybe an endurance-event or something, i;s not clear yet, a bit of a stormy head.
Let's keep in touch.

This is a good time of year to do a 200K and maybe a 300k brevet. Also, join your local and national Randonneuring club or organization. Then do a full series in 2006 and a full series plus PBP in 2007. It is never too early to start training for a 1200K.

I want to be there in 2007 but I have lots of distractions and family issues. I greatly enjoyed PBP 2003 and I could go on for pages describing the ride and the our wonderful French hosts. If I do go, I think I would arrive a few days before the start, do the ride, pack up my bike and ship it to the US, and then travel with my wife, who is not a real cyclist.
I generally don't like to travel in Europe during the summer -- too many Americans. :D
Here in Florida we have finished a full Brevet series. I am glad to see all the interest in PBP. If any of you are planning to do BMB, Gold Rush, Or Last Chance, I hope to meet you there. There are four 1200Km in the states. I will not be doing Seattle, Wish I was.
