View Full Version : Most Wacky song you use?
Just a conversation starter here... What is the most atypical, odd, wacky, strange, extremely unexpected song you've used in class?
Of course, what was the reaction? What do you use if for (ie. what function)?
I ask because I feel like I'm pretty narrow in my scope. I mean, I use all types of pop/rock/alt/funk/folk/newage/metal/etc... but I don't get too far off the path usually.
I'd say my most strange would be either some Bela Fleck (usually a warm up or recovery) or some They Might Be Giants (probably recovery, but once for sprints on "Istanbul")
I'm a classically trained musician and (barely) a jazzer... so you'd think I'd like the "Bolero" climb or some Miles Davis for Cool Downs... but, um, I don't.

whoops...they were both received very well, the class enjoyed the humor. I used both of them for sprints (not in the same profile though).

I really like "Surfin' Bird" by the Trashmen for a short (about 2:20) fast flat. Definitely a wacky song but great to ride to!

Don't know if this is considered "wacky", but I've used Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett -- gotten lots of chuckles for that one.
Daydream Believer by the Monkees
The Pina Collada song

I've used a lot of wacky songs over the years- it's kinda of expected in my 5:45 am class..... my latest/greatest (?) was "Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. The ride theme was "Cars". They had fun with it :)

Typically...I ROCK!!! From 70's - 00's. I don't know that I use many "wacky" songs, but I've used some odd combinations of songs on the same CD. Here are some odd combinations.
"Sin Wagon" - Dixie Chicks.....right into "Slow and Easy" - Whitesnake
"What is Hip" - Tower of Power, "Superstition" - Stevie Wonder, and "Weak & Powerless" - A Perfect Circle...all on one CD.
Although I haven't used these next three in a while, I like to throw in some music from before I was born. How about some Blood Sweat & Tears: "God Bless the Child" (Awesome climb....downhill...then straight up again", "Spinning Wheel", "Go Down Gamblin". Then follow it all up with Metallica........now that's WACKY!!!!!!

I almost forgot...hey BF and Rex,
It wasn't me, but how about the woman at "THE CLUB" who used to use children's songs in class. (maybe she still does)
I'll never forget taking her class and hearing "Do...a deer...a female deer...." She gave everyone a note, and when your note came around, you had to jump out of the saddle and shout it out. I was laughing so hard I could barely do it! Not sure I enjoyed it, but I remember it.

LMAO, Ale! I would love to have been there that day to witness you jumping to "Doe, a deer, a female deer - Ray a drop of golden sunnnnn!" Which note were you?
Ok, you got me thinking...my wacky contribution...........
It would have to be Bobby McFerrin's version of the Wizard of Oz. It's a 7 minute version, a cappella, of the entire movie. It's been more than a couple of years...one day I'm just gonna have to pull that one out of the archives for a little fun, I think.
Ride happy,

"Bye, bye, Boyfriend" by the Stereo Sushi Girls. Really stupid song, but catchy and fun for cooling down right before stretch. You could run to it, as well, I suppose. It's just inane and silly. I love it!

What about "I Want an Alien for Christmas" by the band that introduced us to "Stacy's Mom" (thanks, fellas!!! ), Fountains of Wayne. It's got a cute beat, just the right long for a little warmup song.
I've used Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (Monty Python). Always gets a chuckle....

I once did an experiment. See if I could teach a full hour to death-metal.
It was fun to watch the squishy little bodies in my class try to make out the growls in "fisting the mutilated". The high energy of the "music" really worked people hard though... however they seemed to fear me in my black goth makeup and my strange tourette's-like outbursts at them.
i ended the set off with Cannibal Corpses' "I come blood". Then, for the cool down i played Bing Crosby christmas music. Maybe because the old kook used to beat his children with hammers, or maybe just to screw a bit with their minds.
too lazy to go look for my dictionary... wacky means weird?
anyway, I have some dutch weird songs that won't make any sense on this forum, for english I suggest Philip Glass
'Lightning' from the cd 'songs from liquid days' makes a great standing run
