I was wondering if anyone has used them and what they thought.
I picked up a set very cheap and i'm gonna try them once I get compatible shoes.

Have a great weekend guys.......

Groove,

I love my speedplays! They are comfortable for long rides, easy to pop into and out of and almost impossible to pull out of by mistake. Just make sure you grease them periodically (via the greaseport on the side of the pedal) and enjoy!

Speedplay pedals - either you love them or hate them.

I bought a pair of X3s on sale. I heard so much about Speedplays so I'd figured I'd try them out. Here's my critique.

It's true, if you have knee problems or need unlimited float/play in your pedaling, then these are the pedals for you. I do like the double sided pedal which makes it quick and easy to click in.

However, I find the float annoying and adversely affects my pedaling - I felt it was harder to control my pedal stroke. Also, b/c of the unlimited float, my heals would hit my chainstays, which I don't like. Getting out of the pedals can be tricky too. I found you have to rotate your heels a fair bit outwards to get out - I had to be very concious about this.

I use SPDs and Look pedals and found that I am very used to not having or needing that much float. I didn't feel that stable in the Speedplays so I took them off my bike. I'm thinking about selling them

My experience - a mon avis.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It seems like they are a love 'em or hate 'em pedal. Once I pick some shoes and get a chance to try them out i'll get back to you.....

The shoes I quite like are the SIDI Genius 4 :D

Cheers

Groove,

SIDI Genius are the shoes I used with my Speedplays. For some reason I feel the screws coming up through the bottom of the shoes (in particular my left shoe). Also the back of my right shoe hits my chainstay - I don't like that because the back on the SIDI Genius is plastic/hard rubber. I'm worried about my paint job on that chainstay bar.

I'll be curious to see how you make out with you set up.

I really like mine. I use them with my Nikes and the perform very nicely. I have only had one problem and that was a rock getting caught in the cup of the clete which made it impossible to clip in. I suggest getting the "coffee caps" while being off the bike.

Hi Groove
I have the Poggio 1's althought the new 2's look far more interesting. I use to have another pair that I lived in and I ended up leaving them back somewhere in Miami at WSSC 2002- since I couldn't get back there right away I guess I had to get new ones- that was the longest 2 seconds of my life

Speaking of pedals, has anyone ever heard of or ordered from Nashbar? I got a catalogue and the pedals I want in Shimano are $75 and the generic version are $30. Should I chance it with cheapies or no?

I have Frogs on my mountain bike, and put a pair on my road bike when I got it. I really like 'em. The extra play doesn't bother me at all, and clip-in is nearly automatic. It has to be on tricky mtb ascents.

As JFK suggests, make sure you lube them. I didn't and had to replace a pair recently.

Steph,

Yes if you are looking at this month's Nashbar catelog, they advertise the Ritchey Pro V3s for $49.95, an excellent price for a pair of good pedals. They are SPD pedals for a road bike. I like these pedals. I rode the Ritchey Pro pedals for years - they are light, low profile like Speedplays, and your don't get that much float.

The only complaint I have about them is that it can be hard to clip-in as the pedal is not weighed like the Look pedals are. You will have to look down to make sure you are clipping into the right side.

Nashbar is ok to used to purchase online. I don't have ay personal problems with them eventhough I have heard stories about them not wanting to take returned items. I purchased a wheel set from them, pedals, and some other accessories for my bikes. However, I wouldn't blindly buy things that you would have to wear - like shoes (especially shoes), jerseys, shorts, or any other items that falls into this category. I would go to a store to actually try these items on first before shopping the Net for these items.

Nothing against Nashbar in particular as I wouldn't by online at all for personal items I haven't tried on first at a store.

A mon avis.

Thanks Mad... I actually ended up ordering pedals from Performance today. I've spent many a buck with them so far and have had good luck so I hope it continues.

I'm glad you said that about the jerseys though... I was going to order a couple of things from there but now I think I'll wait. I've never bought a jersey before and I don't know how they fit. I don't want to get hassled about returns because I'm horrible about returning stuff in the first place. By the time I get around to it, they'd probably tell me I was too late.
