I think this says it best:
"It is hypothesized that the improved muscular efficiency probably reflects changes in muscle myosin type stimulated from years of training intensely for 3–6 h on most days."
I'm not totally clear on the differences between muscle economy and efficiency and how to train to improve one or the other.

Cliff's Notes version: train hard, ride fast.
Sorry I didn't get in there with the Cliff notes version Ralph. Interesting article. When it came out everyone in our lab was peeved b/c you're not supposed to give details that make the subject identifiable. Kind of hard not to know who this "six time Grand Champion of the Tour de France" might be (who won the world championships and had cancer. Hmmm, don't tell me, I'm thinking....)
Ultimately, I think it's just a "perfect storm" of amazing genetic gifts and the mental fortitude and desire to make best use of them. Coyle just says that in scientific language.
As for legspeed's version . Well, yeah, but it still doesn't work out for most people like it did for this mystery subject.

Dontcha just luv puff pieces in scientific journals?
I thought it rather odd that the first "reference" is LA's first book....and it isn't footnoted anywhere in the article!
I found the second footnote hilarious:
The costs of publication of this article were defrayed in part by the payment of page charges. The article must therefore be hereby marked "advertisement"
Believe it or not, paying page charges is SOP these days for publication in many scientific journals. You have to budget for it as part of your cost of doing research. You also pay for each figure or graphic that you have. Amazing, isn't it?
