View Full Version : What's In Your Back Jersey Pocket?
Just curious as to what ya'll carry in your back jersey pocket on long rides (over 2 hours). Some need to carry an extra tube, some a banana (yes, I ride with some strange guy's) some I know have to have a Cliff Bar. So, besides the common sense items, i.e, i.d and wallet, what's your must to have in your pockets? Mine is a paper towel to wipe my glasses. Kleenex is too soggy!
Looking for fun feedback!
Mia

My must have for a two hour ride is Gu, any flavor except chocolate. However I did just complete a ride with a guy who carried not one, but TWO packs of cigarettes!? He rode remarkably well for being a chain smoker and 60 years old. Maybe those early tour guys were on to something.
My Starbucks card for dopios on the go. And an emergency gel, should whatever concoction I have in my bottles not be doing enough that day. Today I also had a water bottle in my back pocket (in addition to two in the cages). Doesn't make the jersey very flattering, but it sure made the third (and fourth, come to think of it) hour of the ride more enjoyable. :D

My health insurance card...because if I have it hopefully I won't need it...$5 for the QuickieMart refill of my water bottles, GU and my cell phone. Spare tube, tire levers and CO2 go in my teeny-tiny seat bag.

Nothing. The other riders are my unpaid domestiques.
I'm joking, but the owner of a local bike shop which conducts rides always rode with empty jersey pockets.

A picture of my wife. Just in case I die, so she'll know how much I love her.

Terence, you're a wise man...and props to Meg for remembering some weaponry..
As little as possible in my jersey pockets...most everything (tube, patch kit, tools, inhaler, ID, $5., cell phone, key) is stuffed into my wedge pack. The jersey pocket is for quick snacks only. I just don't like all that crap hanging on my back...I gotta be freeeeeeeeee!

JFK - Starbucks card? You crack me up! My husband would love to ride with you!
The pouch has my tube, allen wrench, CO2 cartridge, money and a tooth key chain hanging off it.
My back jersey pocket has... A Cliff Bar, cell phone, my military ID, and floss. I'm a dental hygienist. Gotta get the bugs out somehow!

My card automatically refills, so tell him to come along, I share well with others. My friends know they can bribe me to ride extra-early with the promise of caffeine or ice cream. I've been known to start many a ride standing in front of Starbucks waiting for it to open (at 6 a.m. on a weekend....how pathetic). What really kills me is I was completely de-caffeinated for 12 years. First week into being a full-time grad student last year and I was back on the sauce.

Well, it's 5:30 a.m. on weekdays (I open them then, too), but yes, I've been told I lead a very difficult life here in the untamed wilderness that is CT....

The "dairy-air" is quite lovely some days...especially when, in the course of a mile or so we can ride through "dairy-air" into the smells coming from the Kiss factory. Quick olfactory adjusment...
Likewise, come to PA - you've got a place to stay here, too - and you can pull me up that nasty hill :D . We'll have a corn roast when we're done...

The only thing I put on my back is my cell phone. I don't know why, but I just don't like to carry much back there. In my little under the seat bag, I carry the spare tube and supplies. Food gets stuffed in there too, but it ain't pretty.

I think about how I am so against litter and then I put all those used gel packs ,bannanna/orange skins and ewwwwwwww what else I eat on those long rides-I have lost more cycling jerseys to the stainage of the food.

Gu, Banana, Cell Phone, Power Bar, Sticky wrappers from Gu and Power Bar (fruit peels get tossed it into the woods). Sometimes a map folded neatly inside a zip lock for those tours that are on unmarked roads.
Everything else in my wedge pack.

You can buy flasks for your gel (and better yet, buy the gel in big containers = less packaging in the landfill, too) such as those offerred at www.hammernutrition.com.

I got one and bought the "Bento Box" for the ease of storeage too. Performance has a deal going right now too. Now I just got to find a good place for that Howitzer!

And I thought things were tough in CT.... I hope it's an ultra-lightweight, carbon-fiber Howitzer.

Because I fell asleep watching TV my classic Spinning jersey hung outside on the wash line all night. This morning when I brought it in the pile of wash was buzzing! So you ask what is in the pocket of my jersey - a honey bee! Apparently spent the night in my jersey and didn't plan on me taking in the wash that early. I'm sure the neighbors enjoyed the show.

That's funny Cheeze! I've found a bee in the front of my jersey after a 60 mile ride. I was getting ready to jump in the shower, took off my jersey and there he was. I never got stung. How weird. I swear bees sleep.

Bumping up yet another good thread to add to! Whatcha got?
On variable temperature days - arm warmers. Everything else is in my seat wedge: first aid stuff, tube, tool, keys, money. I keep my cell up the leg of my shorts. And don't bother...I've already heard all the 'is it on vibrate?' jokes.

Since this post I replaced the Howitzer with a 50 mm with armor piercing ammo- Ti tipped of course. Never can be too careful with squirrels running around.

Doesn't the sweat pose a problem?
I have a neat little waterproof bag that the cell goes into that fits in a jersey pocket. http://www.sweatvac.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SweatVac&Category_Code=WP

Nope, it hasn't. I've got a hard lucite case for it. Maybe that stops sweat.

Just checked my post of a coupla years ago -
And I'm still not carrying anything in my jersey pockets. I just hate having stuff in there.
The Bento Box is the best . . . holds my cell, ID, money, and snack . . . the wedge carries the tube and tools (and extra food for a longer ride).
Love that bento box - I can't tell you how many people have asked me about it and are now showing up with one strapped to their top tube.

You know they make honey stingers in a packet, like GU. But I guess if you really want to make sure your honey is fresh...
