View Full Version : Grrrr. Pouring rain not fun.....
Supposed to ride an awesome century in the Berkshires tomorrow (well, 108 miles, but they have hot baked potatoes at the 75 mile rest stop, just after coming up a monster hill). But I am not nutty enough to do it in the pouring rain that is falling now and threatens to continue. Last two weekends were gorgeous. <grumble, grumble, fuss> Time to drag out the 'cross rig and head for some fun in the mud, I guess.

To start up this ol forum again :D
We just started up our cyclo cross (Cannondale Stumptown Cyclocross Classic) at Alpine Rose here 2 weekends ago and last weekends count was over 760 cyclist competing in the races which beat last years 620. We had Canadian Olympian Lyne Bessette (rides for Louis Garneau) who won the elite womans catagory and alot of the locals dominated others. Lots of crashes lots of great efforts. Lots of coverage in the local newspaper which I was glad about cause I was in Kansas this last weekend. Guess I have to taste the mud next weekend

Have fun in the mud! 'Cross really seems to be taking off lately (or maybe I just hang with the wrong people  ) I have no 'cross skills whatsoever, and very little time to learn them, but I'm still hoping to jump in and make a fool of myself. At least I'll be in good company.

Time pedals seem popular with the cross crowd around here. What is the popular pedal in your area?

I like crank brothers mallet- I see alot and then of course the time Atac work well, can be installed with 2 different float settings, and have a large platform. First gen spds do well to with a wider platform

Has it stropped raining on the upper east coast yet?
It's one thing to play in the mud - but not much makes it through waist-high water.
(Nice And Dry) Cheeze
It appears to have finally stopped raining. I'm even thinking of attempting to ride outside tomorrow. It will be windy and cold, though. In the last week, we had something like 7.5 inches of rain (some places had five inches on Friday alone) so that October is now the wettest month in the last 101 years in CT...or something like that. Too darned wet!

Jen,
You can buy some new clothes for warmer riding!!! Nike has some new stuff that layers nicely! Cheeze its now cool enough here to wear the micro fleece leggings and that plastic "incase of Noah's ark building gets back in business" rain jacket. Do you have access to Santini made products there? those are the best. Oh by the way mud is fine- coats soths and protects against more mud.
Meg
Hey Meg,
I actually have some awesome clothes for cold-weather riding, I just want warmer weather. I highly recommend Lands Ends' custom marinac jacket. It's windproof, water-resistant and you can get on it all the goodies (except rear pockets) and it still costs less than a comparable "official" cycling one. I got pockets put on the front chest which are ideal for riding, along with thumb-holes/arm spats. It is one of the few good things about riding in the cold.
My lungs will only tolerate strenuous exercise down to about 32 F, so that's pretty much my winter limitl. Below that I'm inside on the rollers, watchin' my Tour videos.

I had a feeling you may since from what I can tell your not new at outdoor riding :D I want to check out the Lands End stuff -sounds great. I hate that I look more for biking apparel than I do at regular clothing- for me its blue jeans ,T-shirt and tennis shoes -we are talking comfort

Hey JFK,
That means that you miss out on the two best sports (ok, after road riding I guess) around, cross-country skiing and long blade skating. Those are the two sports that most roadies seem to switch to in the winter around here. There is only so much indoor riding I can handle at least.
Honestly, our Spinning programs don't kick in until we have snow on the ground. One of my favourite spots only offer their program from November to March.
Anna
PS. I'm with you on the rain though...as I'm getting older I seem to be turning into this fair weather rider.
Anna,
I love x-country skating and always did okay with it (thought not below 20 F) but haven't done it in ages. I thought about taking up speed skating, but the idea of taking on another sport, with more gear, terrified my husband.
With school and everything else, I ride outside when it's not abysmal, and otherwise, I'm on the trainer, dreaming of spring.

I honestly don't know how you do it, I think you are amazing....school, riding and family on top of it too. When I hear about your amount of riding, I'm embarrassed that I don't get more in myself. You're an inspiration to us all!
As for long blade skating, there are "new" blades out now (they've been around for about 10 years) that only clip on to your cross country ski boots. So all you need are blades and some old bindings to attach them to! It's a nice concept, since it keeps my toes a little warmer too.
