The Amgen Tour of California passed within a couple of miles of my house today so I played spectator and camped out on a short but relatively steep climb nearby.
Very cool experience seeing an event like that close up. TV doesn't do the sport justice with respect to capturing the atmosphere of the event, but on the other hand when you watch the race in person all of the action is over in minutes if not seconds. After the race passed by, I was able to run back to my strategically parked car and was almost able to avoid enough traffic to get ahead of the race again and see the finish of the stage. Unfortunately I missed the end of the race by a few minutes.
Very impressive for a first time event in California. Amgen and the other sponsors have done a great job organizing the tour. This can only help grow the sport even more in a state where cycling's already pretty popular.
