View Full Version : Squirrels? I've moved on...
Well, I'm in the middle of a new War With Nature. Forget the squirrels. I've moved on to BIG BLACK ANTS. I've been seeing them around for the past week, bought some traps and went through the cupboards, tossing anything opened.
Well, I am losing the battle and they are freaking me out. I've got everything out of my cabinets, dishes, everything is all over & I've got any kind of food that isn't canned or jarred, stuffed in tupperware or in the frig.
Meg, I'm leaving Greenpeace. You can come over with your semi-automatic and play Soldier for Hire. Terminex is coming later today and I am keeping my fingers crossed that they aren't carpenter ants. I've got one trapped in a jar. I like to make faces at him.

Pink, I can solve your proble, simply and inexpensively. Go to a local feed store and buy some cattle wormer. Buy some honey, although I feel sure you probably already have some :) . Put several drops of the cattle wormer in a jar lid with a couple of tablespoons of honey. Leave it out on the counter or near any area they're haunting and your problem will be gone in a matter of days, guaranteed! This is a great trick I learned from my wonderful mother.

Ummmm oooookayyy...where would find a feed store in Philadelphia? I'll let my fingers do the walking. Meanwhile, Terminex is already on the way but I'lm making note of your suggestion, Monica. When I called to make the appointment, they tried to sell me on a quarterly contract. I told them no way, if I need them again in 3 months, I'll call. I don't want unnecessary poisons around.

Wow, what a conundrum...my head is spinning (and not in a good, Flow, kind of way).

We've had the same problem in previous summers - not this year yet. I've tried just about everything, including squishing (err. . . .crunching, sorry) their despicable little bodies (if they chose to stay outside, I wouldn't bother them - but when they cross that line into MY territory, the gloves come off.) The only thing that worked was the Bug Man (Ehrlich, Terminex, whatever). They came, they killed, they conquered - with a 3 month guarantee and no quarterly contract.
No more big, crunchy black ants

We have the same problem. They seems to come and go lately. It's fun when you open the dishwasher and they scurry around inside

We have them too, ants that is. Ours are little ones though. My 5 yr old already knows they are not welcome in the house so he crunches them as soon as he see the. I've had pretty good like with treating outside and then the honey thing in.

Tide detergent sprinkled around the perimeter of your house will help keep the outside ants, out. Sounds goofy, but it works like Diaznon (chemical often used to control ants).

Pink I am feeling your pain. Just had our whole house redone and now we get ants. Never a problem before. These are little but still freaking everyone out. Terminex came and sprayed outside the house and I think brought them all inside. Raid didn't do it. Thousands around and in the dog's food bowl. Bought those ant trap bait things and they are just forming a line in and out of those now. There is significantly less activity today than yesterday. Hoping they all DIE!!!1

OK put drops of essential pepperment oil around and on counter surfaces. It is supposed to get rid of the ants. They do not like the smell. Couldn't hurt.
Well, the very nice Terminex man was here, crawling all over my house -- in the crawl space, up in the attic, along the rafters, all through the yard. As I feared, I've got carpenter ants. He found what he thinks is the beginnings of a satelite colony up in the attic. He thinks they are coming from an outside maple tree. Anyway, they will hopefully treat on Friday -- inside & out.
Joy, the Terminex guy told me that I would actually see an increase in activity for up to 3 weeks after treatment...maybe that's what you are experiencing. He also said that because these things are so big, it indicated that it's a mature colony.
I probably looked like I was going to be ill because he assured me that they would get rid of them -- 100% guaranteed. I just hate the thought of the poison around my yard. I'm a little goofy, but I've got a no-kill policy. I've got a bug net & I scoot bugs out of the house. Mr. Pink rolled his eyes and Mr. T. assured that this was not a catch & release operation. Sigh...
Actually, I can't believe we're all being deviled by these little buggers.

Pink, there are truely no words I can offer...you did tell me you were waiting for Mr T when we talked earlier but I had no idea the squirrel mafia had hired hit ants to even the score! Next time maybe you should just give them the seat cushions for their nest!

OK Even Pink should have a chuckle with this one. Very cute.

LOL! Guess I should be wondering what will come next, once Mr. T rubs out this threat. Killer Sparrows?

We just got rid of the bugs that were in our house trying to take over. They were those little black and red beetle type things...I can't remember the name now. They don't do anything, eat anything, etc. So they were just an annoyance more than anything. Box Elder bugs, maybe? Anyhow, you can't squish them because they smell and leave a red stain so I had to do the catch and release method and my husband chose the dustbuster method. They were soooo annoying.
We also get those tiny ants. I use ant traps and the buggers are gone within a day. Ah, the joys of living in a subdivision that was built where a cornfield once reigned.

Oh, we get those Box Elder Beetles at the office where I toil 3 hours a week (sarcastically rolling eyes). They are annoying, for sure.

We have the grey squirrels here. They have tried and knock me off my bike. They have done double criss cross in front of me, fallen out of trees over me. And have done suicide runs beneith my bike to try and freak me out and fall. They are evil-THey are plotting my very demise. I will keep my distance for now...

If we get enough people in the club, we can approach Cannondale to custom paint a frame for us - wouldn't that confuse the heck out of people... a brass Cannondale!

I'd have to check with my LBS, World Cup Ski & Cycle - they had some really sharp looking Cad9 frames custom painted for their team.
