Ok - when it rains, it pours.
My weed wacker finally fell apart after about 12 years of faithful service, so I'm in the market for a new one. I'm ok with that... $100 or so.
Then today, while cutting the grass, I notice that my old riding mower is tilting funny and one front tire is getting cut into by part of the frame, as the whole front end is falling apart. Made it last through the rest of the yard, then started cutting the fenced in area in the back with the push mower, when the old faithful mower started spewing smoke, like it's on it's last breath.
Started comparing prices on line, and prioritizing what needs to be purchased first, and what can wait. I'm looking at riding mowers and my jaw drops at the prices. My wonderful wife is looking over my shoulder and starts pointing at the zero radius turn riding mowers. She said she'd even help cut the grass if I had a mower like that. I kept pointing back to the cheaper mowers that were still $1000 or more, and complaining about how expensive stuff is nowadays. She jokingly commented on how Cal II cost more than one of those zero radius mowers.... ouch.
I wonder if they make mower attachments for my bike - wouldn't that be a great workout? A pedal powered lawn mower!!

Ouch Liz! So sorry you gotta shell out so much dough.
Down here in 'John Deere/Husqvarna/Troy-Bilt' land, it seems everyone's gotta have a riding lawn mower even if you only have half an acre to mow. My neighbors on both sides sit on their bottoms to cut their grass, we all have about the same size lots, about 3/4 acre. It boggles my mind that they think they "need" that to do the job. It's like folks who drive Hummers in the city and never go off road.
I don't mind pushing a mower, feels good, it's mindless work and I enjoy a cold one right after the job is complete.
Save the $$ Liz, stand up and mow!! :D

Did that for many years - have an acre and the land is at a 20+ degree slope - used to do it for my leg workout. Only problem with doing it with a pushmower is that I have a septic tank and live on some very abundant springs, so even cutting the grass twice a week with less than 15hp is like trying to cut the grass with a wet noodle. A pushmower is about an 8 hour venture.

ok then (it's all in the details) :D . Guess you'll be shelling out, sorry!
But my neighbors have no excuse, it's flat as a pancake in our yards. :P

Now if I could find a pedal powered mower, I wouldn't mind spending 8 hours cutting grass... Anyone know where I can get my hands on one??

Oh, just hire yourself a lawn boy they need extra cash, and then you won't have to store a big 'ole clunker.
Ouch, Liz. Sorry to hear it. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet & sign the check.

If I get a new mower that I feel is safe to ride without the front end collapsing, then I can get my younger son to start cutting the grass again - he gets some spending money, and I get more riding time on the bike :o)

Hey I hear ya about the broken mower. Seems the frount ends are the weakest link. We are in some ruff country here and I am allways fixing the frount ends. The linkage takes a pounding. There are replacement parts available but expensive. i keep some old junk mowers behing the barn for parts.
When our last lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the truck, the car, playing golf , riding the bike- always something more important to me.
Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived back from the fields one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again, I handed her a toothbrush.
I said, "Dear,When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway".
The doctors got me to walk again, but will always have a bit of a limp.
