Getting geared up for the "teacher appreciation week". I'm printing off these nifty "recipe like" cards from foodtv.com. I thought I'd share with my online buds this recipe. It's a family favorite that we eat at least once a week.

I hope you like authentic italian and not that garbage at Olive Garden.

Oh lordy Shannon I am coming to your house for dinner! This looks splendidly tasty and thank you for the post.

Didn't know next week is "teacher appreciation week." May I be the first to tell you that I appreciate you! I have fond memories of ALL of my teachers from when I was growning up. Such an important job you have, and I know you are DAMN GOOD at it girlfriend.

OK, this is past useful for me but Shannon/NJSpiner/Any other teachers out there, help out parents:

What are good gift ideas? As parents we like to give an end-of-year gift to let teachers know they are appreciated but I bet you have enough mugs, stationary, candles, pens, etc. to start your own shop. What works? Give the parents of young kids some good ideas. The times I was a room mother (which was just about every year because no one else wanted to be bothered--heck I was a room mother for classes my kid wasn't even in!), I'd collect cash. I'd just have an evelope and people would contribute whatever they could afford & sign a card.

Pink....great idea to get suggestions out to people. I was an elementary teacher prior to becoming a school counselor (prior to my current gig as a SAHM). You are definitely right about the mugs, plaques, cutesy-little-"World's Best Teacher" things. The best gifts I got were gift cards (to an education store, the mall, restaurants, whatever!) from either an individual or the whole class. I know, the cliche response would have been "the best gifts I got were handmade," but I'm just being truthful here. Most teachers have enough school stuff at school and don't need to decorate their homes in apples and mini-chalkboard plaques!

Yes I have enough of the above mentioned. I'm very thankful for all the stuff I get, sometimes I don't think parents really know what to get.

Yup. I give gift cards to 'Teacher Tools' for end of year gifts. THey are always having to shell out their own money for classroom stuff, so I think they really like them.
Speaking of Teacher Appreciation Week, I'm going to be spending tomorrow baking my butt off to send in goodies for a luncheon on Friday at school to kick it off. :D

To all our teachers on this forum....THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO, YOU ARE SPECIAL!! :D

Ok, as a HS teacher I have no clue what good gifts are. We seldom get anything. It is as if once they leave middle school and start to change classes, teachers don't need gifts to let them know they are appreciated. HA! I think we need them more! Kidding aside. Shannon said it the best.. Gift Cards! The few gifts I've gotten from graduating seniors were for local eating establishments and after a hard days work in the classroom they are surely appreciated because who wants to come home and cook? (Double that who wants to cook since we have two teachers in the house here!)

An aside: my eldest is graduating college in two weeks. She recently called home and said she has applied to grad school, for of all things, to be a middle school history teacher. WHAT? I can't tell you how many times she has said " NOWAY will I ever be a teacher!" :P Just goes to show you....they can sure suprise ya! High School teachers need much honor. I can handle the little ones, high school students scare me!

Ok~on to the recipes, anyone gonna share their family favorite?

I just think it's because there are so many teachers in high school and some cannot afford to give. 8 teachers at a pop for one kid times 3 for me would becrazy. I couldn't just give a small amount to each.

In elementary school we all contribute $15 at the beginning of the year which should provide for teacher gifts and classroom party extras. I usually get something else as well. I do agree that giftcards are probably the best idea instead of them receiving 20 mugs.

Off Topic but it's nearing the end.. so here you go Shannon and VSmith... and any other lurking teachers out there.
Top Ten Ways To Know You Are Ready For the End of School:

10: You're so tired; you now want to answer students' questions with "Shut up!"
9. Your friends call to ask how you've been and you immediately scream "Stop asking me all these questions!"
8. Your garbage can is now you’re "IN" box.
7. You wake up to discover your classroom is on fire, but go back to sleep because you just don't care.
6. You consider a 40-hour work week a vacation.
5. Visions of the upcoming summer (and sleeping in) help you make it through Monday.
4. You don't set your alarm any more because you just don't care if you're late or not.
3. The next kid who asks you for a pencil is probably going to hear "Don't you ever have anything?"
2. Your Day Timer/Work Planner exploded a week ago.

And the NUMBER ONE sign that you are burned out at the end of school...
1. You fantasize about how relaxing it would be if you were in jail right now.

Recipe for baked beans, made with canned beans, bacon, ground beef, onions, ketchup and other ingredients. DRAIN ALL LIQUID From the Beans...
INGREDIENTS:

1 can (16oz) pork and beans
1 can (16oz) red kidney beans
1 can (16oz) pinto beans
8 slices bacon, cooked crisp, crumbled
1 pound lean ground beef ( I often substitute ground Turkey)
1 chopped onion
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 1/2 cups ketchup
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
PREPARATION:

Brown the ground beef with chopped onion. Combine all ingredients ( drain the liquid off the none baked beans, except bacon, in a large casserole dish. Top with the crumbled bacon. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour.
Serves 6

PS: I often skip the white sugar and use only the brown, add at least two or three other cans of bean..whatever we have on hand as it makes it less meal like. I also double it for parties... but keep the ground beef amount the same...I sometimes use sausage with the beef. It is a great meal on a cold winters night a even tastes good cold from the Fridge in the summer.
