View Full Version : people we teach who bug us...seinfeld style
i've got this rider in my classes who is the wife of a retired principal in our school district. great lady, loyal participant, but she's a lip mimicker...you know, she moves her lips when i'm talking and forms the word i just said, word for word, setence for sentnce and looks me right in the eye the whole time! it's an incredible thing actually as she has to predict what i'm saying next on the run. but of course her favorite bike is right smack dab in the center of the room so i have to see this all the time  who bugs you in your class? do you have a lip mimicker? :D jmd
Oh wow, I've never encountered one of those. I'd be completely mesmerized and would not be able to talk to her 1 on 1. I've no one near as interesting. Until recently, I never had a psycho-cadence rider. Got one now and she is driving me insane. Nothing I say or illustrate slows down those legs. She distracts the crap out of me. The mirror-watchers get on my nerves too.

Where do I start? The overweight very hairy dumpy middle aged man who insists on tucking his shirt under his heart rate monitor strap, the woman who no matter what thinks she is horseback riding - the one who barks during class - the one who looks like she is in some tantric religious praying during class - there are more -

I have a guy that will literally answer every 3D cue I put out there. It’s like I have a one on one with him. I don't hate him or even wish he wasn't there. It’s just at times its not part of the mind body stuff to have your question turned rhetorical. I also have the giggle boxes and grunters. Then there is the constant mouth breather even when its in Z1 and 2. But you know if everyone was the same it would be boring so I have to thank them for the community. Now if there was the constant flatulent person then I would have a different take on it after let’s say the 4th time.

I don't really have anyone who bugs me
Seriously there are people who do very strange, or even bizarre things, (you grow to love them or ignore them) the business side of me say's, "You're kinda weird, but come on in so I can count you on the role!"
"You're kinda weird, but come on in so I can count you on the role!"
exactly!!!....we need our riders, all types, all walks of life......sometimes though i just sit up on the bike and think, this stuff i'm seeing is really, really funny and seinfeld or some other genious could use this material! in reality it's not bugging in a bad way...just a this is bizarre and i'm glad no one can read my mind way. hey and i don't doubt for one second that someone who has instructed me--the queen of clutz--in aerobics, has a few reflections on my performance or quirks either....jmd (shoot, my smilies won't work!)

What realy gets me is the konw-it-all students that give instruction to the newbies. This person gives advice to every new person and will try to carry on a conversation with them.
If it were legal, I'd use the super glue mentioned in another thread.

I was having trouble coming up with one until I read Raff's. Yes, I've had this and man oh man is it annoying. Two gals came in whom I had never seen. I asked if they had every taken a spinning class before. The one replied, "Oh yes" and the other, "No, I'm new." I asked the first one who had taken classes if she would like help setting up her bike, and she said she was comfortable setting herself up. Great! I thought. Until she said, "And I can set up my friend here too." "Oh! Are you certified?" I asked. "No," she said. "But I know how to set someone up." "That's OK," I said. "I'm happy to set her up." So I did. They took my class. Never came back. I guess I offended her.

Funny story, today I had a guy come in and get set up and then started his warm up. He apparently was meeting his friend (girl) when she came in she walked over to him and started setting up her bike. They were in the front row and she turns to him with her back facing me and says "I hate this instructor" The guy and her keep talking and he mentions that maybe they should go have lunch instead, she just rolls her eyes and slogs around trying to get set up. Then we get started and the warm up song comes on, she starts laughing and complaining, finally the guy says to her "let's just go and we can get lunch", I think he might have been embarrassed at how she was acting. Anyway he takes off and leaves her there, she finally leaves as well.
Phew...it was good riddens, she would have stayed and caused more trouble and then I would have had to get ugly (like I've done before with her) hence....the reason she hates this instructor  Giddy on out!! In cases like this it's best to avoid any energy, I noticed people in the room looking at them as they were leaving and I paid absolutely no attention to them, just as if they weren't there AND best of all I was able to count them on the role :D totaling 24 today mates

Wow, that's quite a story, Moon. I am envious at how you are able to let it go. I know I talk a good game about allowing things to roll, but I would have been quite upset. Good for you! Just wondering, how did you cross hairs with this one before?
moon....was handling drama queens part of your job description? b/c you did a great job of it! maybe she was one of those "aggressive when hungry people" apparently her partner knew her well enough to beg her to eat instead of riding!!!! just wondering, is the moon full, maybe she's a warewoman and needed to go find her next kill! note her body hair the next time you see her, if it's excessive, she's definately a warewoman....glad you shared! jmd

What a biiiiaaaaattttccchhh. I totally would have stuck my tongue out at her for you if I was there. I rarely have strangers in my class. I work at a very small, granola crunchy, tree hugging, type of gym and the classes range from 3 people up to 13 people but no larger and we all know one another for the most part. So if someone came in and said that about me I would have every right to pull out my can of whoop-dee-doo. I can't get over how awful some people are. I mean, grow up!

I subbed this class mid-morning and this is what I saw:
One rider read a magazine during the warm-up, then proceeded to bounce and "sprint" her way through the next 45 minutes, oblivious to what we were doing.
Another rider took a PHONECALL! Yes, a mobile phone call. And had a short conversation on the phone. She also leaned forward with hands in HP3 while in the saddle for all the flats.
Then everybody left without a word.
Wow, that was wack.

Ok now, don't hate me 8) , but I really feel so lucky to work where I work, after reading all the characters you all have dealt with, in this thread.
Thankfully the military community is respectful and of good character. :)
If people in our gym acted they way the above mentioned have, I think they'd be "evaluated by a professional" and maybe relieved of duty or something.

Ah the haters....
I hold absolutely no value to this person's opinion therefore it doesn't bother me. I mean she hates this instructor? She's obviously crazy. :D
Now if this would have been someone who's opinion I value or respect, I would have had a harder time with it letting it roll off.
And if she would have been more vocal meaning if she yelled something to me as they walked out, I definately would have responded with a big OKAAAAY (or something like that) and laughed it off.
BTW Like, thanks for the compliment and I would love to meet you too :)

I had a weird encounter. I was subbing for a VERY early class. One of the participants saw me walking down the hall. Several other participants were around me as well. He yelled "oh no, are you teaching this a.m.?" I said "Yep" He said "I am out of here".
The weird thing is, this guy was a regular in my class for about 2 years. I think he has a crush on the instructor and that was the ONLY reason he made it that early to class.
It really hurt me. But everyone in class said "don't worry about it, he is a jerk".
So we went on to have a great class!

Wow that is really ignorant.
Looking at it from another angle, it could be he thinks your classes are too challenging for him that early. Nonetheless making a comment outloud like that is just plain ignorant, thoughtless and asinine. I'm glad you were able to shrug it off and put forth a great class. Shows you have real passion!
