Look for a Ride of Silence in your area to ride in memory of cyclists injured or killed on the road & help raise awerness of sharing the road. I'm sure we all have a personal experience of an injury or close call to themselves or to a close friend.
I'm planning on participating in the Ride of Silence in Camp Hill, PA.
Here's a link to the Ride of Silence website with a better explanation of the ride as well as where the ride will be taking place nationwide. Also check out the Ride of Silence Poem.

Thanks, Liz - I was unable to do this ride last year, but this year I can make it. Looks like the Hbg. Bike club is doing the Camp Hill ride as well; I'll be there.

If the weather cooperates, I'm planning on riding there after work from Carlisle, then riding home to Dillsburg afterwards.
See you there! Guess I'll have to say hi either before or after the ride since we're not supposed to talk during.

We had an accident near my house this last week. A couple of girls were racing their car down Foster Road where the bike lane crosses. They hit the cyclist and he was killed instantly he was wearing no helmet (not that it would have helped). Needless to say "ride as though you are invisableand never take your eyes or mind off the road. http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/05/cyclist_killed_on_southeast_fo.htmlM

It's a deal - I'll look for the tatoo and Cannondale :)

Sound like the lowest type of driver too - a hit and run. When they catch that person, they should tie them up ini the bike lane and let all the area cyclists ride over her until she looks like roadkill squirrel. (Hit & run drivers = squirrels)

Another damned squirred took out another cyclist (Hit and run after bars were closing after Cinco de Mayo - nuff said). Another rider to remember on Wednesday:
Stan Oldak of New York City was finishing up the Houston 400 km brevet Sunday at 2:00 a.m. (the brevet had begun the previous day at 5:00 a.m.), when he was struck by a hit-and-run pickup truck driver and he died almost instantly.

He will be greatly missed.

After getting about 10 other people to participate in the Ride of Silence, I'll have to miss it tonight.
My DW's 12+ yr old yellow lab passed away last night. She's (the dog) been slowly deteriorating over the past couple of months and the vet pretty much said that due to her advanced age there wasn't a whole lot we could do. We could tell last night that she wasn't going to make it, so we just laid down beside her and petted her until about 2am when she took her last breath, then I was up the rest of the night comforing DW - it was her dog and they've been through a lot together over the past 12 years. Took the morning off from work to take Max to the vet to be cremated and to be with the wife. Unfortunately I had to go to work this afternoon. She doesn't want to be alone for long and I don't want to leave her alone for long, so unfortunately I'll be skipping the Ride of Silence, but will be with you all in thoughts & prayers.
Ride for those who no longer can.

Oh Lizard, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know your DW is so grateful to have you at her side after losing her pet and friend. Twelve years is a long time to have a dog, and all of the memories and love shared make it so hard to say goodbye.
There's always next year to ride. No worries. Just do what you need to do.

Liz, I'm so sorry! It's tough to lose a pet; they become so much a part of the fabric of life. I'm sure Mrs. Liz is grateful for your support.
With the storms coming through, I probably won't head over to Camp Hill either. Does a solo Ride of Silence qualify? If the weather clears, I may be able to head out for a bit.
Catch up with you another time,
Beth

I think solo rides count too - lot easier to do them without talking too. I have my bike & gear in the car in case the weather improves to ride home and at least get in a short ride. Otherwise, I'll have to wait for the weekend to log some serious saddle time.
Family comes 1st
Bike comes 2nd

Remember, I usually talk to the cows I pass on my solo rides. Guess they'll just have to do without a little conversation if I head out there tonight :)

If you talk to the cows, make sure the pigs don't hear you or they'll squeel on you!!
Liz (and Ms. Liz),
I am so sorry for the loss of your loyal family member. It just breaks my heart to hear of a beloved pet's passing. I am sure pup had a wonderful life and felt your devotion until her last breath. Please pass my condolences on to your wife.

We still have Rocky - my shepherd/collie mix that I got from a rescue group named PAWS. I got him as a pup and his foster parents were dog trainers, so he came house broken and fully trained. Ended up going to obedience classes with him so that I could learn the basics!
This morning Rocky wouldn't eat - kept looking for Max outside, upstairs, all around the house. When DW & I got married, our two dogs were instantaneous buddies - almost like a dual wedding :D
Think we'll wait a bit and let everything settle before we decide to get another pup.

I hear you loud and clear. I had two rotties at one time and one passed away and the other was not right for the longest time. You know they are more human then we are a lot of the time?
