Dear Mat,

Although you will need some time to heal this July, know that when you do you will be better, stronger, faster!

You really are Steve Austin, the bionic man. "We can rebuild him. We have the technology."

Life will be much sweeter once you get this done--just don't forget to mention this when you set off the metal detector at the airport.

You are strong and fit and I know you will recover quickly.

wow! i had no idea Mat!

nothing but good vibes coming your way from the south!

It's going to make a world of difference! I know so many who have had almost immediate relief following the procedure. my cousin had both done .. he was in his early 30's at the time, and needed them replaced following a bad auto accident. he's 40+ now, and doing great! can't beat him on the golf course!

Will Mat's new hip make Mat more hip? Or is Mat so hip that having a new hip will make Mat less hip? Or since it's clear that Mat is hip will his new hip turn him into a hippy? How many of us will yell "hip hip hooray" when Mat gets his new hip? I know I will! Got any more?

I would've preferred that a big deal not be made about this, but I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your sincere good wishes.

Yes, it's true that I'm going to have hip replacement surgery on my right hip, but my good friend Mike jumped the gun a little bit because the surgery is not scheduled till July 17. I would like to have it done sooner if at all possible and am first in line in case there happens to be any cancellations before that date.

The reason I'm having the replacement is because I have osteoarthritis in both hips that is due to a birth disorder that prevents proper rotation of the hip and causes the bones to rub together and eventually wear down. This is causing a great deal of pain & instability in my right hip when I try to walk or just move in general. Fortunately I'm not having any problems with my left hip as of yet.

I did a great deal of research and really lucked out because I was able to find a doctor here in the LA area named Dr Lawrence Dorr, who is one of the most renowned joint replacement specialists in the world. His list of joint replacement patients include fitness icon Jack LaLanne, winemaker Robert Mondavi as well as a host of other celebrities & pro athletes.

http://www.dorrarthritisinstitute.org/meetourteam/bio/dorr

Anyway, the prognosis is that I will have a full & complete recovery and I look forward to being able to get fully back in the game once again in a few more months.

I am sorry Mat. I fast forward this whole thing. But as a valued friend and comrad I felt compelled and support from your community is always a good thing. Never feel like you don't have caring friends. In today society you sometimes never get to know your neighbor that lives 20 feet from you. You are the best Mat you deserve the best.

Mat,

I hope you're getting a way cool titanium hip or something (carbon maybe?) In any case, I hope all goes smoothly and you are pain free very soon!

I'll miss seeing you at WSSC...I'll watch last year's movie as consolation.

Jen,

Titanium it will be. After the surgery I'll actually be required to take an anti-biotic whenever I go to the dentist.

You know I think we first met at the '01 Miami WSSC in the Hospitality Room set up for Presenters & Volunteers at the Eden Roc Hotel. That was such a great place to hang and just relax, get some free food and maybe even catch a few pearls of wisdom from Johnny himself if he happened to drop in. Of course the Hospitality Room was axed all together by MDA the following year.

I'm thinking maybe I should bring along a few extra DVD copies of your Mt Washington Ride from last year so everyone can at least virtually experience JFK being on hand this year.

You remember correctly Mat - or, "Mat with one t" as I always say. :D

The hospitatlity suite was nice, but I think hanging in the lobby is better. No free food, but it's open to everyone, which I prefer.

I'd like to be able to put my feet up, though. See if you guys can work on that for next year, okay?

Glad to hear your hip will be of the finest materials.

Does this mean you may be able to join us next year? I seem to remember you fearing that the WSSC & your "school conference" would always fall within the same time frame.

Much has changed in the last month.

I've decided not to get a Total Hip Replacement after all and am opting instead for a more conservative and less invasive surgical procedure called Hip Resurfacing. A good friend urged me to look into Hip Resurfacing because he felt very strongly that I'm much too young for a Total Hip Replacement and I have since found that I'm an excellent candidate for this procedure because of my age and high bone density.

Hip Resurfacing is the same procedure that Floyd Landis underwent back in September of last year. I actually met with Landis' surgeon, Dr David Chao, down in San Diego a few weeks ago, but have decided to have my surgery done by another San Diego doctor by the name of Dr Scott Ball at UCSD Medical Center on Mon June 25th.

http://medicine.ucsd.edu/ortho/faculty_and_staff/Dr.ScottBall.shtml
http://health.ucsd.edu/news/2007/5_1_Ball.htm

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to having the surgery done and being able to soon start enjoying a new & exciting chapter of my life free of constant pain.

For those of you who saw me hobbling around at WSSC last weekend, it was my great pleasure to see and meet you all. It was definitely a drag not being able to do any of the rides this year, but I'm definitely coming back to Miami better than ever in '08 and look forward to being able to ride with all of you.

Mat I'm so happy to hear you've successfully scheduled the surgery for a date that isn't too long of a wait for you. I know you have soldiered through the pain with little (if any) complaining. You are an inspiration (right now your probably embarrassed since you're so modest) but it's true. You are such a positive person. These traits will ensure your recovery time will be brief and your surgery will be a huge success!

Mat,
MI Michael Ferrante had a total hip replacement and said Spinning greatly enhanced his recovery. Watching him ride during his Ironman session, you'd never know anything had been wrong. Good luck with the procedure and getting back on the bike.

Mat, it was a pleasure to meet you in Miami (I walked with you to see the MAT practitioner). Even though you must have been in pain, you had a smile on your face, bright eyes, and an open personality that just drew me right in. Your optimism is amazing and no doubt will bring you back around to a new pain free chapter in you life.

I look forward to seeing you back on the bike when we meet again. Sending you healing vibes,

Mat(t),

Approach the surgery with a positive attitude and look at it as a bridge to new health opportunity. Stay patient in the rehab and keep a vision of what you want to be physically after the recovery/rehab is over. Keep that image of yourself wither cycling/running or whatever it is that will get you through the difficult time ahead.

Remember your health is everything and it's worth 100% of your efforts to maintain it.

Wimmer always has the best tee shirts and I forgot to get one this year. I'm jealous of yours!!

Good luck, Mat! I'm sorry I didn't go to Tobacco Road with you the night of my arrival. I've been going through my short list of regrets since coming home and that one keeps coming up. Monica,

Tobacco Road turned out to be an even cooler place than I thought it would be. Just a total dive with good cheap food & drink, live music and no cover charge. There was a really good blues band playing downstairs and a progressive rock band playing upstairs. There's also an outside patio area with still another bar. The place is open till 5 a.m. 7 days a week and on Thu, Fri & Sat nights the kitchen is kept open till 4 a.m. I actually went back there again on Sun night.

Thanks again to all of you for all your support and words of encouragement. It really means a lot to me.

There was an interesting tv news story that ran yesterday on the local San Diego Channel 10 News about Hip Resurfacing, which is the surgical procedure that I will be undergoing on the 25th of this month. It was a very positive story and featured a San Diego area man who is doing so well that he's already back to doing intense 2-4 hour daily workouts only 6 weeks after having the surgery. I went ahead and put it up on You Tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmnvVa56YyE

I actually was considering having my surgery done by the doctor featured in the story, Dr Michael Kimball, but have decided to go with another doctor who has more experience performing Hip Resurfacing surgeries. Anyway, this should help give a better idea of what this surgical procedure is all about and how it's proving to be a viable alternative to getting a Total Hip Replacement for a number of younger active patients.

The doctor who will be my operating surgeon on Monday morning at UCSD Hospital, Dr Scott Ball, made a recent in studio appearance on the local San Diego Fox 6 Early Morning News Show to discuss Hip Resurfacing.

http://www.fox6.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoId=322291@video.fox6.com&navCatId=5

Hope this interview will give everyone a better idea of what Hip Resurfacing is all about and why I've chosen to have this procedure rather than having a Total Hip Replacement.

I find myself feeling very positive as I'm about to embark on a new chapter in my life.
