View Full Version : A question for the ladies...

I wonder if any of you ladies could shed some light on a problem I'm having. I seem to be skipping menstral cycles on occasion. I've skipped two within the last five months. I do not fall under the category of those who let their body fat drop below five percent. On the contrary, I fall into the category of overweight. I teach four classes regularly a week, three resistance training workouts a week and I run five miles once a week. I seem to get all the symptoms (irritability, fatigue, etc..) but the cycle never comes. If it helps at all to know whether or not I'm stressed, well, I have two teenagers and a three year old, you do the math. Please share any ideas you may have as I suspect this is affecting the way I feel and my ability to drop a few pounds despite the restrictions I've put on my diet for the last two weeks.

Hey Monica....obviously seeing your doc is probably the best thing to do, to get a real answer. But since you're just asking us for thoughts on it, I'll say that after I turned 40 or so my cycles have been screwy, not really totally skipping one, if anything I've been getting them more closer together over the last 5 yrs. Like every 20 days or so. :x
My doc says, hey, face it you're just getting older and probably you are pre menopausal, so you can go on a birth control pill if you like to help regulate them. (I said no thanks)
Don't know just how old you are, but maybe this is a factor. :)

Yeah, okay, I'm 37. The pre-menopausal thing certainly crossed my mind but I guess I don't want to believe it. My sister is three years older than me and hasn't had the first symptom and my mom was fine until her late forties. I'll schedule an appointment with my doctor but I suspect he'll say the same thing, hey maybe I should just send you the $125  . Thanks for taking the time to post. :)

Monica - have your hormone levels tested. It might prove to be your best answer. You said your bodyfat % was not an issue so I am guessing that unless you are pregnant (yes you can still get periods while pregnant) it's hormonal. It migth not be pre-menopausal but check it out.

Good advice Joy, but I can rule out pregnancy; two teenagers and a three year old, yes, I've had my tubes tied.

Monica, Make an appointment with your doc. There are so many things that come to mind when you described your symptoms but the first one that I thought of was ovarian cysts. I have a friend that was having similar problems to you-wierd period, feeling bloated, weight not coming off, etc. She discovered that she had a cyst and they are treating her for it. Please keep us updated!

Most definitely see your gynecologist immediately. There are many things that could be causing this, and there's no use in guessing what it means. Good luck sweetie, and let us know what you find out.
Monica -- I'll echo visiting your doctor. So many things can throw off our cycles. Most are nothing to be concerned about but it's always good to be sure.

I lost mine when I was at a normal bmi - my doctors just said it was from my level of exercise (I was a competitive runner then...). Everyone's body functions differently, so weight is only one factor (of many) that influences your cycle. Questions to ponder:
Have you had more stress lately?
Have you been pushing yourself harder while teaching/running?

I'm having the opposite problem. Closer...and closer...and closer...and now I'm TICKED! I'm seeing my doctor on Friday. I know he's gonna say the M word and I'm gonna have to hurt him.

Why would you need to do that?
He's either right....in which case you could discuss management strategies.
Or he's wrong....in which case you could ignore his advice.
No need to act like someone with diminishing estrogen levels.....you'll get us gen-U-ine menopausals a bad name.

Because I don't think one should be assaulted with both a 40th birthday AND that news all in the space of a month!
Geez, give a girl some time to adjust.

I'm actually okay with it NOW. I did have a hard time though. I know it's just a number, and dumb to get worked up. I missed most of my 30's...it's like they weren't even there, so I WANT THEM BACK.
Drinking sounds good, Abby :D I need no excuse for that. Let's go!
My 40's were the best! So far 50s haven't been so bad either.
