K-girl:
I think you posted something about this on PO awhile back. How would you define an "All Terrain" ride and how does it differ from an Interval? I'm really struggling with this and just can't get my head around it. Can you please help?

I view an IEZ ride as one that has specific work(effort) and recovery times. One that is also specific in the type of intervals (aerobic ones, aerobic/anaerobic, anaerobic ones) performed.
All Terrain are a phase 2 type ride, kind of like rides that do not fall into a specific Energy zone. It's not ALL climbing, so it's not an SEZ, even though HR might be set for 75-85%, it's not mostly seated and under 80% and focusing on riders base building and endurance work.
My loop rides (that are not IEZ loops), out n back rides, hill repeats or 2 hill or 3 hill profiles, those are what I call All Terrain. BUT...they still have some specific focus or purpose to the ride.

Thanks babe! That helps TONS! I'm also revisiting my Profile Design & HR Games Workshop outline book. I remember you told me there are Phase 2 rides in there (and you were right).

The Phase 2 Ride really does exist with MDA. I'm not sure if the term "All Terrain" is MDA though. The K-girl can probably answer that...

If I'm not mistaken, one of maddog's monthly profiles was an all terrain ride and listed as an Interval. If I find it, I will post.

If you really want to get down to brass tacks there are only two types of rides that you can do. Steady state and interval.

I can't remember how many years ago it was, but I believe that the All Terrain was renamed Interval Energy Zone. I like using the term "interval" instead of all terrain, because to me it really addresses the "work" and "recovery" aspect of the ride. It makes it so make clearer to my riders to explain that.

And I still say I can have 100 profiles for each. So there!!!
