Hey Mary,

I'm not at WSSC, but I'm having a good time in New Orleans, waiting for word from Miami. The food here is something else. Yum! Not getting as much exercise as I would at WSSC, either, but too bad. ;)

Mason (Redsquirrel) gave me some terrific restaurant suggestions and we had a great time at one of them tonight (Cochon - great call, Mason. Unbelievably good!). Can't wait to try the others tomorrow and the next day.

Can't wait to see pix and hear stories. Get busy you all!

My bags are packed.
I'm ready to go.
Just got to try to sleep before I'm up at 5:00 AM to get ready.

Will let you know how things are going if I can find a cybercafe.

Jen, why aren't you singing at the Cat's Meow? Watch out for the street kids that try to bet you that they know where you got your shoes. (You got your shoes on your feet.)

Raff, if I sang somewhere, you'd be hearing about a mass exodus from this city! Thanks for the tip on the shoes...so far no street kids (we've been hanging out in the warehouse district more than anything. Very funky, not too touristy). But maybe I could make some money with those bets...:D

Raining all afternoon, which does not affect any indoor cycling...but the conference is well structured so far.

Funhog's ride this morning was very well presented.

Did she disclose the "secret?"

We'll have to look forward to a full overview once the participants have digested the whole thing.

On my flight home last night I kept hoping we'd have to make some sort of landing in Miami...and that they'd let me off and I could surprise you all. As nice as it is to be home (and it is), I wish I'd had a chance to make a Miami incursion.

Very different kind of conference experience for me in New Orleans. First, the luxury of not presenting! Haven't had that in a while and it was nice. Get up 15 minutes before something starts, or sneak in a bit late. Hmmm, there's a lot to be said for this.

I went to a very cool three hour symposium on blood doping (file that under: things you're not going to see at WSSC :eek: ) with scientists from two German universities. Also, a fascinating session on a genetic co-activator and its implications for mitochondria. I know, sounds arcane, but it actually has some interesting issues in terms of exercise intensity. Jury's still out on specifics, lots of research yet to be done, but intriguing, very intriguing.

Okay, geek out. Can't wait to hear about the Miami experience!

Love to hear more about these. Like, the genetic co-activator for mitochondria - does this also affect metabolism? And to what extent? Does it determine an optimal type of energy source for a particular person? I need to know more here if you don't mind.

T & I are in the airport.... WSSC 07 was a blast. A great time was had by all. If you did not learn anything new or about yourself, you were not paying attention or were asleep. This was my first time participating and I met so many great people. It was great fun reaquainting with the old Crew as well. T and I are already planning next year. I hope everyone had as wonderful of a time as we did. My best to all.....

Yes, it affects both fat metabolism and insulin resistance. The other questions have not yet been answered. The speaker summarized research being done at his and at other labs. They are still working with rats and extrapolating to humans.

What the research showed, as with many things, some may be good, but more (or over-expression) causes big problems. The genetic work so far has shown that many phenotypes are responsible for small amounts of variation. There's still more that makes us alike than different. I think in two decades, if not before, we'll be prescribing exercise based on your genotype. But it's going to be a long time before we really have all the information *and* equipment that anyone but major institutions can afford.

See that's way too long for me to wait. I need results now. Who is going to want to look at me in another 20 or so years. (LOL) Thanks for the response. I have played the laboratory rat so many times and nothing works. I am yet to figure out how to get where I need to be. I've waited this long what's another 20 years, right?

Joy, you sound like some of my anerobic junkie students, just kidding (since the smiley doesn't work).

I had a wonderful time and need some time to digest the entire conference. I got to meet so many new people from the forum as well as touch base with the gang from last year.

The conference taught me a lot about myself. I picked up a lot of great information for myself in terms of what to say and not to say when the microphone is on.

I can say that once the pictures make it to the forum, you'll be able to put faces to the screen names for a lot of people.

The experience left me with a great appreciation for the friends I get to see only once a year, and the new ones I met. Above all, they made this weekend extra special. Just 364 days until 2008!!!

More to follow when I get time.

WSSC was amazing, as usual. Better than last year (but that could be because I'm older, more open-minded, more mature, and a very different instructor than I was a year ago at WSSC).

The people were even better than last year. Everyone around here is like a fine wine. Better with age.

Don't let Patrick fool you he's still got a long way to go until he matures, ;) but I think he's headed in the right direction.

Sat in a very interesting lecture about the value of stretching, no absolutes given, but a study of all related research said there is no conclusive link to show that stretching helps prevent injuries. Studies with Olympic caliber sprinters showed that stretching actually hurt performance. This lecture also talked about the potential harm of stretching cold muscles and the benefits of active vs. passive stretching.

Michael Ferrante's Ironman ride was very challenging; it was miniaturized version of the Lake Placid cycling leg and he's riding with a total hip replacement, no less.

Have to take a bit more time to fully digest the rest, but those were my highlights.

Jennifer, I'm interested in hearing more about the blood doping seminar, who knows there may be a place at WSSC for that one.

Fooeyy......
Going bald
Hair growing in places it shouldn’t
Actually understanding what your parents were saying to you
Sounding just like your parents
Aches and pains
High school reunions and what was thought to be cool really was absurd
Loosing train of thought or the first quick step in a drive to the hoop.
Did I mention the hair?

I wasn't at WSSC but I took the HIT continuing ed class with Michael and he was fab. We were his first class back post-surgery and he said he was going to "go easy"....man if that was easy, I'd hate to see "normal". But very nice guy and wonderful MI.

Hey SpinBob...Sounds like a great ride! I've done LP 3x and ridden the course several more...I'd love to hear about how Michael set this up as an IDC ride. Do you remember any of the details? Can't imagine riding that course (or many others!) with a hip replacement. He must be an amazing person.

Thanks!

Thanks!Traci, Michael didn't show us his profile and I've never ridden the real thing, but basically it was a long gradual seated climb until we got to mama bear and papa bear, then there were some standing climbs and some runs with resistance sprinkled throughout the ride as we passed slower riders up the hill. PM me and I'll send you Michael's email address, when I unpack my stuff. He's such a nice guy he might share his playlist and profile with you.

Wow! What an experience! I had an awesome time, met some really terrific people, and got a valuable education. Part of that was learning what to do differenly the next time but that's the learning curve and it certainly has value. I'm exhausted but in a good way. However, I'm not as tired as Cannondale Guy (Felix). He did four rides back to back in a short period of time on the third day! He was so spent (for good reason). He stopped talking mid sentence a couple of times during dinner last night and had that far away look in his eyes. I have to say, I was a little jealous! Get some rest Felix, you maniac! I hope I get to go next year and meet even more of my forum friends and see all those I just met, again. What a treasure!

Jennifer, I'm interested in hearing more about the blood doping seminar, who knows there may be a place at WSSC for that one.

The question is, do I make more $$ by teaching how to detect it (the focus of the session I was at) or how to do it? <big, evil grin> I'm kidding about the "how to" part...that's out of my league and a disgrace to the sport.

I suppose natural methods of enhancing one's oxygen carrying capacity and the like could be an outgrowth of that subject area.

After waking up this a.m., first chore on the list was tackling the disgustingly stinky laundry. MY WASHER BROKE. Water leaking all over the place. So I spent the afternoon, buying a new washer. It will be delivered on Wednesday. And my kittie is peeing blood, so I had to get her to the vet.

Pink I hope your kitty is ok. My washing machine blew up on Friday in the middle of a load of laundry. New washer and dryer were delivered Sunday but not installed as we are waiting for the new tile floor to be put down first. I was told I'd have it together by Wed but doesn't look like it will be. I am beyond pissed. Smelly workout clothes and 3 kids in the house. Thankfully my neighbor has been letting me do laundry there daily. I have been trying to only do one load per day so I don't tie up her machines. Today is whites. Can't wait for my machines. Maybe then I'd enjoy doing the laundry? Actually it's not the washing drying part - it's the folding and putting away that gets to me.

Somewhere on the "other" forum is a thread about this...where Pink talks about how much she enjoys folding and I invite her over to do mine. And never mind putting it away..my house is overrun with clean laundry that can't find its way home.

Commiserations.....my washer died a couple of months ago and I had to replace.

Comiserations also with the kittie.

When I walked indoors Sunday pm, I smelled the tell tale ambience of dog piddle. My older doggie.....nearly 17 now and still going strong....has early renal insufficiency (dh usually gives her lab results the once over and opines that if he had a patient of 110 or so with such minimally altered blood work, he'd be amazed at the health of her kidneys......that's physicians for you!!) Anyways, Daddy insisted that he'd been walking the dogs "often" and she couldn't have widdled without him knowing......within 5 minutes I'd tracked down 4 "wet spots". His next excuse wa she "probably" had a UTI. Just as we were going to bed, he mentioned that the vet called with her results from her recent physical and, yes, she had a UTI......so I have to take my doggie to the vet for a sterile urine collection for culture.

If this isn't bad enough we've just put the house on the market and the Open House is on Sunday ...... just had the carpets shampooed in preparation and have to get it done again, now.

Don't even ask about moving Dr. Baby into her new apartment!!!!!

I'd love that lobby right now.

Wow, V, you've got it coming at you from all directions. Kittie doesn't have a UTI. They kept her yesterday, forced fluids so they could get a urine sample. Lots of transitional cells (in clumps) which could indicate accute inflammation or tumor. Because she's had a history of interstitial cystitis, they suspect that vs. tumor. She's on steroids and driving us nuts as she enjoys peeing in the bathroom sinks. I keep throwing bleach down the drain.

Good luck selling your house, Vivienne. What's your motivation? Downsizing? Changing location?
