View Full Version : Spinning In The Mix
Having watched Josh and Scott, DJ/Instruct the seminar, I'm convinced that's within my reach. Obviously it requires upgrading from the basic Mixmeister software to much more advanced and featured programs that also include key change equalizing, multi track overlaying, and other advanced features.
Anyone using anything like this?...not Mixmeister levels 1 & 2....I'm into that and although it's very functional, I got a taste of the next level of this and want to go for it. Fusion is the most interesting program I saw from them so far.
It's probably a $250-$400 expense...actually he cost of a WSSC itself, but it might be worth it.

I use Sony ACID (Ironic isn't it?) which has multi layering and alot of things that make more robust mixing. Pump up the jams AC let me know what you get.

Don't know about the sound systems you're working with, AC.....but to make this stuff really work I'd have to pony a few pennies for the sort of set-up that was there in that main ballroom.

Just visited Sam Ash to replace my mic and saw this free demo cd Abelton Live - works for mac and Windows
www.abelton.com
According to the gentleman there - this is the bomb of mixing software with a hefty price (around $500) - might be more than you need but I am going to check out the demo.

Not talking about the sound system...the sound mixing software. The stereo sound is fine. Time to take the skill to another level.

I saw a different level of doing this besides just 2 track overlays, cross fades and edits. There is a higher art and one needs the proper level of software. It's a different skill set. The goal is to get DJ quality presentations on a regular basis and it's possible.
I've got a bunch of Sam Ash stores in my area. I'll stop in when I'm back in town.

I was also thinking in this direction, I feel boxed in with the MM express. Let me know what you go with, "Hey Mr. DJ, put the records on............"
I thought I was the DJ and you were the manager?

You can still be the face....like a Milli Vannilli thing.
OK...joking aside..the reason I attend WSSC's is to have something to take back and go forward with. The overall riding theme I got from the weekend was "Original Spinning". It started with watching Josh's ride on Thursday evening where he used mostly music from several years ago that was introduced to most of us 7-8-9 years ago, but the presentation was in context with now. Use of better music mixing techniques had the riders quite lathered up (granted a captive audience of instructors is somewhat easy to please) and there was nothing original in the choices, but totally original in the method.
So...most of us have thousands of songs and will get hundreds more in the next 6 months. Nothing changed about the stuff we have except for the frenzy we create for ourselves to have something new and newer. So...would you spend $300 to make thousands of songs you have work better for you, or just add another 300 songs? $.99 for ITunes as a basis. Change to a .ru site and it's another thousand songs.
Why can't I (for lack of a better analogy) repaint the exterior (music) while upgrading the interior (class profiles)?

Pro 6 is what I have and it came with some other software they bundled with it but have not checked that stuff out yet. I still want a 3 day weekend in PJ's and Coffeebucks to get some more track time

I agree with you AC (wow, did I just say that smilie?).
BUT for me personally, unless when I order that type DJ software, a (cute and very patient) tech dude pops out of the box to sit next to me and talk me through the HUMUNGOUS learning curve I know I'll have, then I don't see myself delving into this advanced music mixing software. Guess I'll have to settle for my plain jane MM Express 5 and find some other way to lather up my riders! (big happy, sticking out the tongue, smilie)
Any suggestions on how I do that?

You can dump alot of songs on top of each other but the ability to sub divide the sing song into tracks and remove ,lets say, the lyrics is a masking event to be hold.
DJ AC is going to go vynal some day!

Wait. Mixmeister is limited to two-track overlays?
Overlaying is possible for more than 2 trax, but there is nothing you can do with it other than adjust BPM, volume, and song length. So, you can make some kind of multiple track racket. But, Catfish, I stand corrected. I'm still working with a $40 version of MM I bought 8 years ago. I can stack trax...but for what gain?
Check out some of the demos on the MM site for Fusion and for Sound Forge 9. I'll probably chose one of those.

Ummm, don't be so sure. There are a TON of plug-ins that give all sorts of digital fx.

Are you still running Windows ME, too?

LOL....XP buddy...There's a difference between remixing, key changing and beat looping and "digital effects". I'm not looking to make Xmas and Halloween CD's.
I didn't think I'd need to upgrade because simple cross fading and editing was sufficient in my world. I want to play more creatively now.

True. And Mixmeister 7 does all of that. But I guess if you want to spend a lot more money, that's your business.

AC there is a guy out there called Girl Talk who does all mashups. My daughter saw him in Providence at a concert and she sent me some of his stuff. You might like it although alot is rap-infused. If I knew how to send music I would send it to you. Its in my ITunes library. If you are really interested I would need instructions.

The product line's been changed. And the thread is about getting more from better, upgraded products that actually might cost more. And again, cost in relation to presentation and taking into context the costs of upgrading software and the additional costs of additional songs.
Cost is always taken out of context without looking at a budget, and what the total expenses are in running an instructor's business, that include travel, educational, clothing, computers and of course...buying additional/new music.

Mash-ups are basically free online. there are several websites that you can Google that will link them for you. When you get to the site, just right click on the link and save as any file. The reason they're free is that they are bootlegged/illegal, so they can't be sold. A lot of DJ's who do these have their own sites. Their business is getting paid by the club for their appearences and what they bring to the club in terms of their mash-up creativity. I'm not going that route...unless I can get a job as DJ Ancient.
Check some of the music threads on the p-O forum and you'll find them also. I have several hundred of them....some really good and some atrocious. Some of the hip-hop ones are quite good. I had remixed a few with the original cuts myself, and what I hear would be solved by what I was writing about in the posts up the page. Key mixing would blend songs together in the same key.

I was just reading that you can take "DJ workshops" in England and the US, but they are really expensive and it's basically one on one tutoring. I was acutally thinking this same route as well recently, I'm ready to take it to the next level. Does MM have a "owners manual" for the upgrades? Like a DJ for dummies kind of thing?
