View Full Version : iPod Freezes During Class

Last night's class went well until the last working song came on. I was just building them up for the big finish up the final climb to the top of the mountain when my iPod froze and the music stopped. :o I coached them through the last 4 minutes w/o any music (a first for me) and luckily, I had some great folks on the bikes that hooted and hollered and encouraged everyone to keep working. I even had a person watch the clock for me (it's behind me and I usually use my iPod's counter as my timer) and count down the seconds of the final seated sprint (he just started counting down out loud on his own since he was watching me painfully crane my neck to try and count down by turning and looking behind me, upward, where the clock was--that person was my husband--now you know why I love him so much!) :)

There was a storm last night and the spinning room was particularly humid. I don't know if that had anything to do with this happening, but I've NEVER had my iPod just STOP and FREEZE like that in the middle of playing music. I tried to reset it (slide the button on the top to the right for 5 seconds, then back, and then hold the center button and top button at the same time until the screen fades to black and the apple appears) but it wouldn't budge.

Then, when I got home, I tried one more time and held down the two buttons for what felt like a life time, but it did then reboot.

Just wondering if anyone ever had anything like this happen or if it was just a goofy electronics thing that was random.

What kind of iPod? I went through three 40 GB 4th generation iPods the first year I had mine. It was still under warranty, so it didn't cost me.

I've had two kinds of events freeze my iPod, some kind of impact and some kind of computer glitch will my iPod was syncing.

I suppose a corrupt music file could also cause a freeze. I suggest deleting the song that the iPod choked on and copy a new version from you computer.

Lori, check with AC, he's talked me through many an Ipod glitch. Had that happen myself in the middle of a 90 min class...had to finally pull out a CD and randomly finish the ride.

So it HAS happened to someone else during a ride! Mary were you able to get your iPod to reboot eventually? I was having a heck of a time getting it to respond to the motions but like I said, eventually it went. I was relieved it happened at the end of the training session rather than the beginning. Mary I'm sorry it happened half way through your class! This brings up a valuable lesson though, and that is to always carry a spare CD when teaching! You just never know.

Bob I have a 30 GB Video iPod (5th Generation). The only thing I have on it are profiles so it's not like it's over crowded with data.

I'm going to do as you suggested and remove the profile and then reinstall it from my PC for safe measures.

I just wanted to know if it was a Nano or one of the larger models. The smaller iPods, have Flash memory and the larger models have a disc drive like your desktop computer.

Flash memory is less susceptible to jarring or impact than a disc drive.

Was your iPod on your bike? If you were really jammin' on your ride you could have upset your disc drive causing the freeze.

Yes, the iPod was on my bike connected to the handlebars. It's quite possible I may have jarred it--it's seems odd though, as this has never happened before when jamming on a ride.

I have recently ventured into the Nano phase of my itunes journey and coming from Dells DJ the IPOD has locked up/crashed more with in the first few months than the years that I have owned and operated the Dell. I have come to this conclusion.
IPODS OS is Windows 95 :D

All the major problems I've had with my iPod have been associated with some kind of impact.

Hopefully since you were able to reboot you iPod, it will be okay. You might want to consider taking it to an Apple story to have them run a diagnostic test on the disc drive.

Yes, we came home let it sit and rebooted it and it was fine. What I later discovered was when I touched the wheel to make a micro adjustment to the volume, I inadvertently (think operator error), hit the play (?) button at the same time and it went into FF mode and promptly locked up. I now never worry about what would happen if my music crapped out and I had to teach for say 43 more minutes. I now know I can take out my just in case cd put it in and keep going.

If you hold down the middle button and the menu buttom simultaneously it acts as a restart. Did that work?

I've had so many ipod issues, that I bring a backup Cd every single time. You are not alone with the frustration! Good luck!

Hi Musicgal!

I sure did! That's what I described above. It didn't work for first several attempts but eventually it worked! WHEW! But yes, always always always bring a back-up CD!

lori,
ditto kiddo on the ipod freeze, but mine was during warm up at the new place i'm teaching. the stereo system is clear in the back of the room, so my ipod is nowhere near me and one of the guys asks, "do you have it on hold?" now i know i have blonde tones to my hair, but did he think i secretly snuck off my bike and hit the hold button after i was already into the ride and my music was playing?

okay, so i rebooted and things were fine. but i have had several repeats since then and had to go online to troubleshoot...finally we cleared all the songs and let the battery wear down and started over. my model is old, so we thought it was due to that. as of now, i've had two weeks and we're ipod freeze free. i know it builds character to be able to go with the flow and shoot from the hip and throw in a cd, but, these devices aren't free and neither is my time! i hate when the computer/ipod wins....it's a teacher thing i guess! good luck, and may your ipod recovery be long lived! take care...jmd:):p
