OK, I'd love to hear what all of you choose to eat the night before a race. We all have our favorites. Mine tends to be pizza or beef stew.

I'm boring. ;-) Mine is pasta with olive oil and freshly grated parm. and a banana for dessert.

I like noodles with cottage cheese. It's an old dish from my childhood, that just happens to be great fuel.

Bob I thought I made that up! :D People make fun of me for eating that but I too enjoy this dish!

I try to find a local pizza place near where I'm staying the night before a race and consume a pizza with a cold beer. In lieu of a pizza I'll opt for pasta as a 2nd choice.

I like to use sewer pipes (rigatoni). I think we called them sewer pipes when we were kids because we probably couldn't remember the name "rigatoni" when we were little. I like to use cork screws too though! Fresh ground pepper on top of the cottage cheese. Man, I am getting hungry!

One word of advice, DO NOT attempt a long ride the morning after eating either:
:o Blazin' wings from Buffalo Wild Wings (a.k.a. B-Dubs)
:o Atomic wings from Quaker Steak & Lube
:o Insanity wings from North Hanover Grille (Carlisle PA)

Liz,

I take it you are a wing person. I don't eat them that often, but I have learned to stay away from Mexican food and anything with tons of garlic in it.

Does not sit well while racing.

It's just this weird fascination I have with pushing the envelope - longer rides, hotter wings.
Insanity wings at the Grille are the best - I was up to 15 pre-bike season. Don't touch them during the riding season. You have to get into a zone and once you start eating, you don't stop for ANYTHING. Don't stop to drink, don't stop to talk, don't stop to even grunt if someone talks to you, don't stop to look at or count your wings left, don't even stop to BREATHE! When you're done, wipe your hands and face, down a giant glass of beer, then watch everyones faces as they stare at the metamorphasis your body goes through from goose bump chills, to rolling sweat. About 20 minutes later, the spectacle is over and you're able to hold a regular conversation with your family and friends again and enjoy a beer.
The next morning, the pain starts all over again with the sensation of a chain saw being inserted into your body and revved over and over again. (That's why I don't recommend riding the next morning). By afternoon, you're back to normal and can do it again :)

Garlic doesn't bother me. Bacon isn't good the morning before a ride though. Especially on a hot day for a ride that starts with a big climb.

I gottta tell you honestly guys, I'm not feeling love for the pasta and cottage cheese for any reason. Makes me break out in goose bumps just thinking about it, then again I've never been a fan of cottage cheese at all so that just might be the problem!

Honestly, the thought of cottage cheese on noodles sent a quick shiver up my spine as well - even though I really like both foods.

Then Liz had me laughing so loud with her wing experience. I could visualize the scenario - and it wasn't pretty!

But, hilarious none the less.
Thanks for the afternoon giggle.

I am not a racer but for long, fast rides, protein, such as a hamburger and fresh fruit does it for me.

Funny you mentioned that. I once had a hamburger at an Irish pub for lunch - and then found myself cycling about 3 hours later. I had one of the fastest, most powerful rides I've ever experienced.

Maybe that's why we are mistaken for being twins???

Night before race...usually pasta with just a little red sauce, bread, a cookie if any are available (sorry, but I've got a sweet tooth). Pizza also works for me. If it's a really long event, then I tend to salt stuff (also in the days leading up to the race).

LOL - that's actually the reason I got my tattoo - so they could tell us apart :D
One last pre-race meal that I forgot about - this works for anyone around Saratoga Springs, NY... On my way up to Lake Placid for the ADK540 I stop at my favorite Irish Pub, The Parting Glass, and have a big Guiness stout and an INCREDIBLE corned beef sandwich on egg battered bread that is almost like super thick French Toast. I am now SO HUNGRY and am riding Cal II home in about 20 minutes. I better warn DW to padlock the cupboards before I get home!!!

You could always take the banana out of your ear, if you get too hungry. Although earwax and bananas don't sound too appetizing. :D

Spaghetti with extra meat sauce and water no wine. There is a fabulous Italian restaurant that makes "authentic" italian dishes (not Olive Garden ). My husband and I now go there for our pre-race meal, kind of a tradition.

That's my turbo boost for the finish line sprint - kept getting bruised and mushy in my jersey pocket. The wax helps keep the banana dry :)

Traveling seems a big part in racing, so dinner tends to be whatever pasta I can get at the local restaurant. If I'm at home, pasta again. Breakfast is what I bring with me. I enjoy fruit, yoghurt and granola pre-race. Post race, if I'm home, is salmon, spinach and some kind of tomato chutney like thing.

I always have a beer the night before a race. Just one.

I'm in the same boat as most, pre race=pasta.

Post race however, is a few Sam Adams Summer Ale. It's sooooooo good! It's seasonal, so get it while you can!

I like the salmon and spinach idea. Sounds like it would pack a wallop.
Oh - and I'm all about a beer or margarita post-race.
