I came across this cool down exercise while reading the Breathing Techniques Home Study and thought I would pass it on.

"During the cool-down section, have your students get water and towel off so that they are comfortable. Riders should sit straight in the saddle, with their arms hanging at their sides and their eyes closed. Have them notice the length of the inhale and compare it to the length of the exhale. Then have them increase the length of their exhale gently, making it longer than the inhale."

I owe the start of my Spinning journey to Mary Jo. She was my orientation instructor back in June 1997. Still amazed that someone so small in stature and so soft spoken could command a room of 50 people for 9 hours. I've seen a lot of MIs come and go. IMO she was one of the best.

KAT thanks for sharing this. I am using for my Wednesday class next week. Love this. Cheeze, would love to hear any other tid bits you learned from Ms. Mary Jo if you have any in your back pocket. Always yearning for more, especially from those that left such a huge impression.

Used this last night. It was neat to see them all realize how short their exhales were in comparison to their inhales, and then watch them close their eyes and take a few moments to try and make their exhale length be equally as long as (or even longer than) the inhale. They really seemed to "get it." It's hard for some people to learn to breath properly. Thanks again for this!
