I lucked into the Creative Coaching Workshop this weekend with Felix, presented by Elizabeth Hoffmann. Has anyone else taken this workshop? There was a lot of focus on teaching to a mixed crowd, from the couch potato to the elite athlete. It was very good.

Here is a quick synopsis of the class.
The course covers the "5 P's" (the SPINNING manual covers only 4):

-Population
Types of Population in our classes and the different coaching techniques.

-Purpose
Giving the riders a clear vision of what they should achieve for the particular class.

-Planning
The execution of the plan.

-Progression
The various ways for the riders to monitor their improvments, both phsical and mental.

-Personal Development (This is a very important one to me!)
1. Evalution of oneself using the Coaching Measurement Assessement in the manual.
2. How much training are we getting in?
3. Do we keep a training log for ourselves?

The course also covers the five energy zones along with verbal anchors, the human connection factor, the technical aspects of each rides as to heart rate zones, cadences etc...

The class reviews a series of creative ride profiles:
1. Criss-cross HR Zones
2. There are a series of Ladder Profiles that climbs 5 heartbeats to every 4 mins. until the rider reaches 92% MHR. The rider reverse the process by lowering his heart rate by 5 beats every 4 mins. There are a few other examples of 'Ladder Profiles".

Two case studies where given. As instructors we had to develop two quick riding profiles around the 5 P's. The profile rides where designed given a specific set of issues that we all encounter in our daily classes. It's a great excercise tool. You have to think quickly on your feet to develop the profiles and adjust your ride if need be to cover the Population your riding.

-The Mind/Body connection was stressed.
1. Being mindful of what you are doing in that moment in time and space.
2. Focus on the course to stay on the objective at hand.
3. Stillness, the ability to listen to your body while removing the clutter from your mind.
4. Relaxation while your riding and the transfer of energy(ies) and forces.
5. Teaching at the human level, the human element.

We concluded with a 55 min. ride using all of the above and more!!! It was awesome!

The class was full of very useful information that we can all benefit from and ultimately our students... I encourage everyone to take it.

My favorite quote from the class:
"I am not a teacher, I am an awakener." - Robert Frost

Thanks LIZZY!!!!

No, no, noooooo! Don't tell me that! La la la la la, I'm not listening!!!!
I opted not to ride, I did nine classes in six days. Sunday is my only day off. I pull a double on Tuesday's and a triple on Thursday's. I just had to take the day off. Plus, I had to go almost directly to another workshop. The one with the hypnotherapist. I'm going to have another session with Dick, as I was having difficulty relaxing. There was a particular person there whom I have had several negative experiences with. I let it mess with my mo-jo.:( However, I definitely see how this skill could benefit myself and my class members. Since Dick is already applying for this workshop to offer CEU's, Lizzy said he should see about taking it to the WSSC. How cool would that be?! That's my next mission. I'm really feeling all of the excitement from last week..... Felix, it was awesome getting to spend some quality time with you. Thanks for everything!

It seems to me that you covered it quite well! OLD? Who are you kidding! I don't even dare try to keep up with you.
I loved that Lizzy made the room feel full even though there were only three of us. She's awesome!

There's a great Mental Assessment in the back of our workshop ouline. I'm going to fill it out, check my score and "see more clearly which areas I need to work on". However, I'm going to wait until I'm not so burned out!

Great advice! I'm working on trying not to. I'm a work in progress. One day, I'll get it right! ;)
