OK, I need a fast question answered (although I'll be my usual long-winded self).

Do you think I can substitute Lite Beer for beer used in a beer-batter bread recipe? I'm ready to mix it within the next half hour and I have no beer experience. The only beer I've ever drank was the night the Phillies won the World Series....so you can tell my experience is VERY limited.

What's the difference between lite and regular beer, other than calorie count? It shouldn't matter, should it?

Never mind -- it's in the oven.

Pinky-do light beer should be just fine! You've probably already tasted it by now--by the way, can I have the left-overs (that is, the food AND the beer)...;)

In the words of Charlie Papazian - one of the world's greatest brewers - There is no such thing as bad beer - some beers are just better than others.
For most cooking, I wouldn't worry about what kind of beer it is, as long as it's beer. (One for the recipe, two for the cook...)

Hmmm

Did Charlie Papazian ever try Blatz, Old Style or Old Milwaukie?

Some beers are MUCH better than others - those are good cooking beers, or good stuff to keep on hand if you have a neighbor that likes to come over a lot for a free beer (along with Schlitz, Red White & Blue). I think they're also good for removing paint & stubborn wallpaper...

Those three, along with Grain Belt Premium, got me through college. They will always hold a special place in my heart.

I should have known this thread would turn into more than recipe advice.

You all are hysterical! The october beer tree really got me! Hillarious.

The only thing I have to add is a *warning*, and maybe a few sorority songs. (you knew it wouldn't just be one thing)

My drinking days are long gone but this I know...Warm beer doesn't taste any better if you add ice. ;)

You know you want to hear my beer drinking songs don't you? :D

All I can say is the bread was yummy, even using the lite stuff.

Anything by the Ommegang brewery, particularly Three Philosophers, and Blue Label Chimay... We say we were 'chimayed' the next morning.

I don't know if you can substitute Lite Beer in bread - but there's very little difference in taste when you substitute Lite Beer for "beer can chicken".

SpinBob

Beer can chicken? Can you explain that or share the recipe?

Here's a recipe for Beer_Can_Chicken (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_27819,00.html). I've heard of it, but never tried it. I wonder if they flavor the paint on the cans differently for regular and lite beer?

Personally, the 'if you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it' rule of thumb works best for me.

Interesting, I've never grilled an entire chicken before, I guess you could use one of those Foster's cans with a turkey. :D

Bob,

Did Abby tell you we are coming up to your place for pizza and beer? You could make that "Beer Chicken" as a side dish. I'll bring the beer.
