View Full Version : Slightly concerned - Weight Loss

Typically, I check my body composition every 3 months with the club's little computer thingy (I have the print out at home so I can't share the name). This saturday I checked my comp and was surprised to see I lost a little over 4 lbs since September. While this isn't a dramatic loss in weight, what is concerning me is that it was all free fat mass. I went from 108.2 to 103.1. THAT concerned me. I don't want to lose the hard earned muscle that I've gained in the past 9 months of working really hard. Since September I've been slacking a bit in my weight training and doing a bit more cardio (kickboxing) on days I don't cycle but I didn't think it was enough to see this kind of loss.
Any ideas, suggestions, comments, theories?

First things first -- I'd question the accuracy of the machine being used before I'd get too upset. I'm under the impression that most are questionable. Hydrostatic weighing is considered much more accurate than the various scale-type things on the market. And btw, it's not lost, I've found it. Would you like it back? :)

Where would I get hydrostatic weighing done? I'm so close to philly I can throw a rock!
Hydrostatic weighing is typically done in a university setting. That said, my desk sits on top of our former hydrostatic tank, since we've got a DeXA machine which does body composition and bone density (and you can stay dressed). :)

I'm pretty sure they do it at Temple. I talked to the guy who did them a few years ago but got sidetracked and never went. It's on my agenda for after the holidays.

After the Cowboys spanked the Iggles this past weekend? Highly doubtful.

Oh, trash talkin'! I think the Skins will apply the same hurt this week. Can't wait for the Redskins/Cowboys games. They should be good this year.

HEY! I live in Philly!!! (Although, there are some days throwing stones at it may not be too awful, but I'll still be defensive!)

I think they did hydrostatic weighing as part of a study. I don't know if Temple offers it for regular people. But I will look into it. When I asked my boss about hydrostatic weighing she told me that.

I probably missed my opportunity then. I did talk to someone at the time. I don't remember much, just that I'd just have to make an appointment & it was relatively inexpensive ($50 maybe?).
But you know what this means now, don't you? After 3 years of procrastinating, now I'm going to become obsessive.

Hydro testing is about currently 400 dollars by me.

Wow, now you've got me wondering. I *know* if it were that much, I would have let the idea pass. I can't remember the amount but I do remember I didn't flinch and had planned to schedule an appointment....life got in the way, though.

Just an update on this - I'm in a posting mood today it seems.
Dehydration can cause the numbers to go wronky... which is my problem. Seems I'm drinking too much Red Bull and Vitamin Water and not enough regular water. So it goes. It's nice to fit into a size 10 again - the last time was when I was 18. That's a long time ago.

Regular water is the nectar of the gods. Truly. I always try and drink regular water rather than anything else.
