Just took the STAR 3 Exam--missed two questions and am looking for your feedback.
#4. VO2 max is the minimum amount of oxygen consumed.
I ANSWERED False but Mad Dogg marked it wrong and instead the correct answer is written as "Flase" (I kid you not). GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
#49. Which Energy Zone™ can be used in both the strength and the anaerobic periods?
A. Endurance
B. Recovery
C. Strength
D. All of the above.
I answered C. Strength, since the SEZ includes up to 85% (threshold).
Mad Dogg says the answer is D. All of the above. WTF????

L~ i'm no big defender of mda; but i interpret the question to be asking which type of classes would be appropriate to take if you are in the strength and anaerobic cycles of your periodization program. in which case, all of the above would be correct; as anything goes when you're at that stage ... but should include recovery and endurance training as well.

Consider what is happening during the strength and anerobic periods during a periodization cycle. Endurance rides are done throughout all periods of the periodization cycle. You should never ignore your aerobic development and maintenance during any period. You just replace some of the workouts with strength and interval efforts.
During the strength period you will be replacing endurance rides with strength rides, not all of them, just a couple. If you went hard during a strength ride a recovery energy zone is appropriate.
During the anerobic phase of your periodization cycle, interval rides are added and replace either strenght or endurance rides. Once again, after a hard effort, you will be riding in the recovery energy zone while still maintaing a nice mix of endurance rides. Since 85% of MHR is often considered threshold, you can still use strength rides in the anerobic period.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more.

Ditto what they said about the anaerobic phase....but I'd fight for credit on the first one. That seems like a typo.

Yeah, they probably meant "VO2min" :D:D:D

Hey Lori,
I'm sorry I can't add any more feedback than what the others have given you. But, I am curious about a couple things. Did you still pass, even though you missed these two questions? If so, CONGRATS! If not, do they require 100% for this exam?
Also, how do you know which ones you missed? When I took the Periodization exam online I only saw that I missed one question, but I had no way of seeing which it was. It has been bugging me because I was totally confident that I had answered them all correctly.

But Lori, didn't you learn that vo2 max occurs before threshold at your Spintensity session at Kent State????
I know, I know, I shouldn't go there, but I am. And anyone reading this, VO2Max occurs AFTER anaerobic threshold, the presenter was just a little confused. Oi.
You should call or email Robin@spinning.com to fight for this.

Or blow it off, and put the patch on and continue with life.
When I worked in the corporate world and ran certification, our test makers would always bone up a question, and someone with 99% would spend an hour on the phone with me telling me how stupid our company was because of the bad question.
We know that you know that they don't know and in the end it doesn't matter.
The only part that matters is that you did the work to become Star 3 and you've attained a goal that is worthy! Congrats!
;) PS
If you took that test and only got that wrong...you're Star 2.98. Round it up and declare victory.

Thanks for your feedback on the Strength question I missed. It all seems so clear now thanks to your comments. Now I'm wondering how could I have missed it! :(
JohnNYC, yes, I still passed. :) I think you only need to get 48 out of 60 questions correct. Thank you for offering your congratulations!
I'm not going to fight the "flase" question (Mike have you secretly been moonlighting for Mad Dogg)--it doesn't matter that much to me to fight for it (my time is too important to waste) but I just wanted others to be aware of this, if they take the test. And actually, it seemed rather humorous to me which was another reason I wanted to share.
Oh, and John, the GOOD news is that Mad Dogg HAS improved their online testing system to NOW SHOW YOU THE ONES YOU MISSED! So, I MUST give KUDOS to them on that note. For all the bitching I do about them, they DID improve that aspect of their testing system and it's a WONDERFUL improvement.

Woo hoo! I'm a perfectionist...it's a curse. If I got something wrong, I want to know what it is and why. It's not enough to me to know I passed, I want to know what the right answers were so I can learn from my mistakes. Yeah...it's a sickness. :D
