Welcome Kris. I don't say much but I see everything. This group is so awesome and is such a wealth of information. I sometimes ask and tend to forget to say thank you to those that help. To those that have heklped me in the past: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! Especially Patrick (And bob, and Yvonne....).

Well Thank you Patrick. I will do just that. :) Except the "berate" part. We no likey that (although we'd never censor it). OTOH, intelligent discussions and well-thought out arguments are most welcome!

Hello from the new guy,
I’m really new at this so I hope you guys can give me some good advice and will be patient with me.
I guess I’ll start by giving a brief history of who I am and what I’m doing here. I’ve always kept in decent shape and this past March I started having trouble with my left side. My leg was dragging a little then my arm went limp. I went to the hospital and found out I had a golf ball sized brain tumor and it needed to come out immediately. God gave me a second chance and it ended up benign. After the surgery I lost the use of my left side, but with physical therapy I began to walk. Once I was walking I started running and ran a few 5k runs over the summer. My son competes in powerlifting and I decided I could do that too. On October 27 I competed in the NASA Ky Regional powerlifting competition and took first in the 148 lb wt class. Now I guess since I have a few less brain cells I’ve decided to train for some Duathlons this spring and summer so I bought a bike and thought it would be a good idea to do some indoor spinning during the winter and on those bad days so I ordered a Schwinn from Billy Garcia. I honestly don’t have a clue what I’m doing. My last 10 speed had the shifters on the handlebars (Yes, I could get an antique plate put on the back).
I would like to train a little at home before going to a class and making an idiot out of myself. Are there any good DVDs out there that could help me at home? I went on line and saw a lot, but without knowing what to look for I’d hate to buy the wrong ones. Also, after reading some of the post from the triathletes I don’t want to show up to class in full disco. I assume that means all decked out in the colorful shirts and gear. I figured from some of the pictures on the innercycle page that bike shorts and a t-shirt would be fine.
I guess that’s it. Sorry about the long winded intro. I’m just enjoying life!
Thanks,
Joe B.

Hey Joe! Welcome to the forum and THANK YOU for sharing with us your very inspirational story. We are happy to have you here with us--we have an incredible group of folks here who are willing and able to answer just about any question you can dream up--really smart (and funny) people. I think you'll fit right in. You obviously have a great deal of courage and inner strength.

As far as DVDs, I've asked the same question in the past and it's always been recommend to get any DVD that Carmichael Training Systems (CTS) has out. Again, welcome aboard!!

I second that on the Carmichael DVD's. I also own one of the Spinerval DVD's and end up cursing at it "You kidding me? Who the *&%#! do you think I am, Rebecca Twig, Connie Carpenter ? Oh, and I should say, welcome.

Love the quote, Joe! Thanks for sharing it.

The DVDs are a good place to start, but don't wait too long before you get to a class. There's an energy that comes from a live class that you don't often find on the TV screen.

Don't worry about looking like an idiot. You won't. And after what you've been thru this year, I suspect this will be one of the easier "firsts" that you've encountered. But look out... If you're not careful, you might find yourself hooked!

Joe, thanks for sharing your wonderful story. It reminds us all to live life to the fullest.

I don't personally have any DVDs so I can't comment on those that are out there. I would also add that www.spinning.com (http://www.spinning.com) also offers different videos. But I will also second Chocolate in that the class setting adds to the experience (if it's a good class).

You could also check in the profile selection of this site and get an idea how to structure your own rides (or do so by reading workouts in cycling training books, or adapt running workouts to the bike). If you don't have a good idea of intensity levels, pay attention to how you feel during different parts of your ride...and use that accordingly. You may find it helpful & interesting to wear a heart rate monitor.

And stay & play with us...we are eager to be part of your journey.

p.s. Don't worry about what you are wearing. Dress for comfort -- bike shorts & sweat-wicking shirts are perfect.

Hi Monica,
You're the inspiration. When I read about you getting back on the bike I had to email you. Every day will get better and you're going to do great! It'll get frustrating at times, but it's a life goal and there isn't any rush.
Thanks for getting me on board here,
Joe

 Thanks, jbon. So sweet of you to say. I have to say I've felt like a complete weenie for the last two days. I cried like a small child in physical therapy yesterday. For the first time since I've been going, my physical therapist finally said something to make me feel better. She said that most of her patients' skin absorbs the lotion and she has to continuously reaply throughout the therapy session. She said that she only has to use about a third of the usual amount on me and that it's a sign of being fit and eating healthy. It did help me focus a bit more on the positive. The doctor, however, took one look at me yesterday and gave me a prescription for valium. :o
One day at a time......
