Not quite a MM/ipod question, but . . .
I'm really wanting to put an iPhone on my Christmas list.
Reviews from anyone out there?

Theyre great, and I've used them quite a bit. They are fantastic for most folks, but the iPod Touch works better for me. The wiFi capabilities and 16g storage were what I wanted from the device, I'll keep my Blackberry for emails, where the keyboard has feedback- and the iPod Touch for IDC music and wiFi surfing.

Beth I might wait a little before I bought one, but I guess it depends on your degree of "geekness" (and I mean that in the most positive sense being that I work with, respect, and deeply admire my co-workers). I work with engineers, human scientists, cognitive scientists and the like (as well as my two bosses and believe me, what we do will change the world but that's another story) and the opinion here is that while the iPhone is currently marvelous, it COULD be STUPENDOUS--i.e. the little "tweaks" haven't been fixed just yet (but you still have a good product that works NOW...it's just that it will get BETTER IN TIME). I'd give it another year, but that's just me.

I'd love to have one, but I can't stand AT&T and won't give them a cent of my money. I wish Apple had picked and better wireless partner. Maybe when Verizon opens their network next year...
Power and battery
Built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery
Talk time: Up to 8 hours
Standby time: Up to 250 hours
Internet use: Up to 6 hours
Video playback: Up to 7 hours
Audio playback: Up to 24 hours
I worry about listening, surfing and talking on 1 battery. Most of the technical improvements from Apple on the Ipod have been in the battery time. Because of the multi use, this one isn't right for me because of the travel time. It's a beautiful device, however.
The ITouch drawback is that it does not sync with MSOutlook. And I need more than 16G.

What data in Outlook were you looking to sync on the iPod Touch? Remember it has no enterprise server capabilities and no email software. It will only work with pop3 email clients which will (most) sync with outlook on the contact list side. I think thats right?
Flash memory is being continually improved, I'm sure within a year or so they will have a iPod Touch and iPhone with twice the storage.
I'm getting it just because I needed another iPod and I like if for wiFi surfing.
I'll let you know how it performs for me.

Actually I was told in the Apple store it would not sync to Outlook. Apple/MS ongoing issues. I already have a Nokia E61i which does everything an ITouch does, and it's got a SIM card. I actually prefer my phone seperate from my PDA. I owned a Blackberry for a few yaers and it's a great device, but it's non-stop, so when I carried my phone with me, it was constant emailing. And the memory on either the Iphone or I touch would require me to carry multiple devices anyway.
They will always increase storage as flash technology improves, so why buy now? My concern is battery time on an IPhone.
I probably will upgrade 2 of my Ipods to newer ones, but not the touch.

My contract is up in 09' (penny pincher here) and by then I'm hoping technology & price make it nice for me to have the iPhone. My FIL has one and I love it, it's one bad mamma jamma. IMO.:)

I understand, and someday I too could want the break from the always on that the Blackberry encourages. But for right now, I need that kind of ongoing status. What I was referring to with outlook was this - since there is no email software currently available for the iPtouch to my knowledge, the best you could hope for is email through a pop3. So if you needed email (from the outlook side) why wouldn't you just sync with a pop3 and alias it with a return email from your imap or pvt domain based addy? If its your schedule and such, well - seems like you already heard thats a no - for now.
I would pass down the iPTouch to one of my kids, and I needed a new second iPod anyway, so I will give the iPtouch a whirl. When they improve the hardware I'll get the newer one if it makes sense for me. Believe me, I havent indulged in the Apple Grape Kool-aid!
Real world experience to follow, I pick it up tomorrow.
I googled and found this, evidently it looks like outlook will sync with either according to he apple folks

PDA's for me must seamlessly sync contact, calendar, and email. The Nokia's SIM card enables me to pick up email and web from any place cell service is available. And I bought it unlocked, so wherever I get the best service for the best price I go. When I spend around $400 for a personal assistant, I expect it to work easily. After that, an Itouch 16G for the price is not a good value.
I am a huge fan of Iods for music, videos and podcasts, so at some point a new 80 or 160G will be on the horizon.
BTW...I'm sure the IPhone after accessories, initiation fees, and the unit itself probably will be north of $600.00

The Sim card has nothing to do with your ability to pick up email anywhere.
A Sim card is a Subscriber Identity Module. It is a encrypted chip used to hold you account number, phone number and other billing information (imei and S#) as well as your contact list for your phone - on most phones. Sim cards enable us as users to own more than one phone utilizing the same phone number and account, say a smartphone for work and a slip flip phone for evenings and dressy engagements. You remove the Sim card and slide it into the other phone. Poof, your contacts are there, and the phone is up and running on the same numba!

The Sim card is my data line subscription to ATT mobile. Thank you for your help. I'm done here now.
