View Full Version : iTunes Extreme Slowness

Last night I launched iTunes and after a minute of waiting I suspected it wasn't going to appear. I went to the task manager and saw that it was listed as a process that was running, but still there was no iTunes window open anywhere. I closed the process and tried launching it again....still no window. I rebooted my PC then tried again...same experience. This time I walked away from the computer and waited...about 5 minutes later iTunes finally opened up. But, performance within it was very sketchy. Sometimes things would happen quickly, other times it would take forever for the program to respond. Additionally, when I was done using it I clicked on the close button and it took almost a minute to close.

Has anything similar ever happened to one of you? If so, how did you fix the problem?

I realize I'm not giving enough information to get a thorough troubleshooting effort going. I'm just wondering right off the bat if this has happened to any of you and if there was a quick solution. If not, I'll see if I can figure out more details to help in troubleshooting.

Thanks!

Did you take the recent upgrade? I always wait 10 days or so from when they first tell me to take it before I take it so they can iron out the bugs. That's the only thing I can think of if you haven't changed anything else on your system.

Yep, I did take the upgrade. The timing of that could make sense. I hadn't thought about that. hmmm.... Is there a way to revert back to an older version, if that ends up being the problem?

Yikes. I don't think there is. I could be wrong there. Let's wait for some of the others to pipe up on this.

I don't think there is....however, I am pretty certain I still have the file from the last one, if you were to save your library and uninstall, I might be able to send it to you. Either that, or look on the iTunes forums for issues pertaining to this. Usually those folks are quick to report and offer up suggestions.

Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on it. When I get home I'll check the iTunes forums to see if people have mentioned it. I agree...if others are having the same problem, they have definitely posted about it already.

ON a PC? Use your system restore and go back a few days before you upgraded to the new verison :)

I second that idea. Let us know how you make out, JohnNYC.

System restore? Who'd a thunk it? It worked! Another d'oh! moment.

Thanks!

Glad that worked. So I'm guessing that you'd recommend not taking this update to iTunes, huh?

Hmmm...maybe not. I can't say with 100% assuredness that it was the update to iTunes...perhaps it was something else on my system that caused the problem and the system restore coincidentally fixed it.

The interesting thing is I have launched iTunes several times since and I have not been prompted for the upgrade. I can't remember, once they provide an update, do you get prompted every time you launch iTunes until you apply the update? If so, perhaps I actually didn't restore far enough back to go to the previous version and in fact it was something else entirely that was wrong on my PC.
