I am new to the cycling community. I have been going to cycling classes on and off for about a year. I started going regularly about 4 months ago. I really enjoy it, and have just become a volunteer instructor in Ft. Rucker, AL. I am attending the instructor class in April. Any advice or suggestions for a new instructor would be great!!

A great big WELCOME to you funderb! This is a great place to learn, discuss, and share with many wonderful cycling instructors spanning the globe! Congratulations on going for your certification in April. That's a big step, and an important one. As far as advice goes, being an instructor is a rewarding experience as long as you are YOU! Bring your personality to your rides but don't talk too much (that's probably the hardest thing to do). Always give your riders the gift of silence, but be sure and give them just enough cues so they know what road you want them to be experiencing. The jitters are normal the first few times, but eventually, you will come into your own and will feel comfortable leading, coaching and inspiring! Practice your rides ahead of time. Alway have a plan and a purpose for your rides and know the progression of your population (what are their goals for cycling?). READ! There is so much to learn out there, take your time and read and learn from others! This forum is a GREAT start--SO HAPPY you stepped up to the plate to introduce yourself. Don't ever be shy about asking questions. We are ALL here to learn from each other. There is a tremendous group of talented (and very warm) people on this forum--so enjoy, and let 'er rip!!!! :)

Hey there--do you know who your Master Trainer will be yet? If you call Mad Dogg, they should be able to tell you.

Oh! By the way, Kelly (goes by kszspin on the forum here) also teaches at a military base in Alabama. I'm not sure which one, but I'm hoping she'll chime in here and elaborate. You are on a military base, yes? I'm assuming so, since you said, "Ft. Rucker." :)
Welcome! Like2Bike gave you some wonderful suggestions to help ease you into leading rides. Hopefully you will find it fun & rewarding, as you gain experience & confidence. I'd suggest reading as much as you can (not just the Spinning manual you receive). Don't be timid to ask questions, no matter how basic you may feel they are. We've all been there. When you plan your classes, do so with a purpose. Find music to enhance your plan, be prepared & HAVE FUN.
And if you are anywhere near "our" Kelly, you couldn't be in a better place!

Welcome to the Spinning world! Yes, Kelly teaches at Ft Rucker so be sure to take her classes as you will be forever changed and inspired. I teach in Dothan and Kelly pushed my butt into this and I cannot express how grateful I am to her for changing my life.
I'm assuming that since you are going to be working with Kelly that you will be getting certified through Mad Dog. Enjoy your orientation; there is lots to learn but it is so much fun. Take as many CEU classes/homestudies as you can - don't ever be afraid to keep learning - that is what will make you a good instructor.
