Just signed up for my first Spinning Certification in Mooresville, NC, for April 13. Anyone else out there attending this one? Any advice or comments you tihnk I should know beforehand?

I've been teaching IDC for about 8 months. I currently have a Schwinn certification and I'm looking forward to seeing how the Spinning Certification differs.

Just felt like mentioning it since I just dropped about $330 on the registration and materials. Kind of a big deal to me, you know!

Yeah, it's a big investment, my suggestion is to go in with an open mind, knowing that of some the things you'll be taught will probably be different from what you've already learned. Just soak it all in and try to have fun with it. If you need any help sorting it out, that's what we're all here for.

Enjoy! Just curious, why are you pursuing the second cert? Do you need it for a new facility?

If you need the MDA certification to get hired somewhere, fine. If you don't, the Schwinn certification is just fine and you don't need to waste $330.

There is a lot of redundancy and ther purpose of any of these certifications is to get hired.

It also depende on which bikes the gyms you want to work in own. If they have Schwinn bikes or Keiser bikes the certifications are much less expensive. If they have Star Trac Spinners and are going to be certified MDA facilities, then you're locked in. Bear in mind that MDA requires you to spend an additional $200 or so every 2 years for 44 Star Points. So you'll be spending an additional $600 by the time you're done, so it's not $300, it's more like $1000 over 6 years. And that's if you go to CEC's locally or at home. Add another $1000 for T & E if you go to a WSSC for the recertification, so that's another $2000, so the final tab with MDA could be around $4000 if you get hooked in.

Soak that all in.

As Bob said, go with an open mind. Take a notebook! I was furiously writing even when we were riding (I asked the M.I. first if she would mind if I reached for my notebook during the 2 rides, AND I made sure I was on a bike in the very back of the room so as not to cause a distraction to the other folks taking the cert.). Take enough water and food for 2 rides, and don't be shy about asking questions!

Enjoy the day--it goes by very quickly and will only reinforce your foundation of knowledge in IDC. Let us know how it goes and all the very best to you!

Soak that all in.All good points, if you're interested in the MDA cert out of intellectual curiosity, it may or may not be worth it to you. After you get the cert, you can alway let it expire without spending another dime, if you find it adds nothing to your IDC career.
