In it's January 22, 2008 edition, the Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil had a topic about generations by age group.
Generations are grouped as follows:
* The Silent generation, people born before 1945.
* The Baby Boomers, people born betweeb 1945 and 1961 * Generation X, people born between 1962 and 1976 * Generation Y, people born between 1977 and 1989
For the last one, one can ask why Y?...
A caricaturist explains it eloquently below...

Oh lordy. I was just reading somewhere that one of the designer's spring line will feature 'dropped crotch' pants for young men, so that they can have their crotches around their knees but have the waistlines fall on their hips.

My son used to wear these crazy pants that were fashioned after Israeli paratrooper's pants (or some crazy thing -- he got them from the Army Navy store). They had all these long straps & metals rings hanging from them. They were huge, but made of thin nylon. It was like washing a tent that could sleep 4!

Can't tell you how many times a day I tell kids to pull their pants up and walk right in the halls at school. Many staff members have just given up. I love telling them that the fashion originated in Jails where Rappers and Gangsters were advertising their wares for the other inmates. Those pants come up to the waist pretty fast after that!

lol, I've always thought that the fashion comes from inmates not being allowed to wear belts.
