I went to a training yesterday, one of the key note speakers was an orthopedic surgeon who was talking about a Vit D deficiency epidemic in the US. He explained that the recommended amount was far to low (400 IC) and the benefits of (2000 IC) a day. I had always assumed that I could get enough from the sun but here in the North America most of us aren't getting enough because of the latitude, weather and sun screen. The research supports some major benefits beyond avoid rickets including stronger muscles. Apparently to even get 400 IC from milk you have to drink 4 glasses a day.

Just thought it was interesting. Vit D is also associated with either preventing cancer or a Vit D deficiency may be linked to causing cancer.

Pharmacist here, and I have seen a large increase in the # of Vit D (ergocalciferol 50,000u/wk) scripts in the last year. When I last saw my own doc in Nov he suggested I take 1000u/day. I have been taking 800 and just bumped it up to 1200. Years ago I did get the winter "blues" but this year it didn't happen. Could it be the Vit D or the fact I ride a Spinner 7 to 8 times per week? Ridng makes me less crazy.

A close friend of mine was convinced she was losing her mind and entering menopause at the ripe age of 30 till a her MD check her Vitamin D level.
High dose of Vitamin d, fish oil and six months later all symptoms are gone.
I found it fascinating and an excellent reason to squeeze in some sun!

I recently did some research on this and I wasn't getting near the amount of Vit. D I needed. I took action a couple of months back.
