Just wanted to get some opinions on the subject of recovery. When/why do you take active recovery as opposed to a day off?

I weightlift 4X, teach 5X and ride about 75 miles per week (will do more cycling as the weather improves). I generally take a day off when I feel pretty fatigued or getting sick, but don't follow any "schedule", for example, take one day off per week.

I'm guessing at some point in the future, most folks who are serious about their training will use a tool similar to this:

Sort of takes the guesswork out of managing your training and recovery. You simply go easier/shorter when your TSB gets too low.

Unless you're totally dedicated with no life or a pro, I'm guessing that living one's life will dictate more than enough days off. IMHO, for most it's not necessary to 'schedule' days off. Just listen to your body (much easier said than done).

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Do you recommend any specific hardware?
