View Full Version : Momma Mia
OK...I include Abba, along with listening to Barry Manilow, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick and Dean Martin among my guilty pleasures musically when I'm alone. So, I like a bunch of Abba songs. They calm me down and make me smile.
This movie is a mess. Meryl Streep can carry a tune and I'm sure they paid her untold millions to do the lead in this, but she's just not very good. The majority of the cast have lousy singing voices, which, to paraphrase Simon Cowell, isn't a problem unless you're in a musical. I think I put on better skits when I was a counsellor in a day camp and writing Color War sketches for campers. Half the movie is 2 people running along a path and stopping by a tree to sing an Abba song. Which song? Which path? Which tree? It doesn't matter. I think they handed the actors the music when they stopped running. As soon as they start singing, they bring up the electronic background and percussion to drown them out.
Yet, there were people in the theatre who clapped when it was over. I was in a state of disbelief. There was 3 good minutes in the movie. The production/dancing for "Dancing Queen" was pretty good. So if you can walk in about 30 minutes into the flick and leave, you'll have seen all you need to see.
Wait for cable...

Thank for the review... I was debating whether to spare the time to go see it. I went to see the play a few years ago and the actors did a nice job then...

Bonds just should not sing!!! If you do not sound good even after your voice goes through the studio mixer - you are not a singer.
I can't believe I stayed through the whole thing.
And I agree with AC. I couldn't wait to leave yet some folks were dancing in their seats.
Abba sould be seen - and not heard. Sending out an SOS.

ACE again, thanks for the review. This is one that had me all excited to see as the previews are continuously running on T.V. (mostly when I'm getting ready for work and having The Today Show on in the background). I'm a huge Streep fan however I will now wait until this comes to cable. I think I might need the time to adjust to the fact that Meryl was just "not very good." Boo? Or....Boo-hoo!
DARN! I was hoping this would be a bunch of fun. Bummer.

Bear in mind, as Cheeze said, there were women dancing in their seats. They were all over a certain age and love Meryl Streep and ABBA. So if that shoe fits, you might like it. If you like High School quality musical productions even if your kids aren't in them, you'll like Momma Mia too.
When Meryl goes to Actors Heaven, there will be a guy sitting there saying, "Well...you have some landmark acting roles here. An incredible body of work....Now, please explain WTF you were thinking with this Momma Mia thing?"

ROTFLMAO. Need I say more, ladies and gentlemen...

Maybe they were clapping because it was finally over!! Thanks for the review I had no desire to see it in the first place and I too like Meryl Streep and ABBA.

Dare I say that I liked it?
I saw it last night with six girlfriends (probably one reason why I had so much fun), but I thought that while this will certainly not be nominated for any Oscars, it was a warm, light hearted and funny movie -- just a general feel-good film. I left smiling.
I agree that the singing could have been better -- let's face it, Pierce Brosnan isn't known for his singing voice, although he certainly was nice to look at! :). I think Meryl Streep did a good job, but my only negative comment would be that she didn't seem comfortable in the role -- it seemed like she was trying too hard. I chalk that up to the fact that she's a fabulous dramatic actress and the musical genre just isn't her usual venue. Overall, I loved Christine Baranski, who I think is a riot and just really enjoyed myself and had a good time.
So call me an oddball :).

Maybe it's a "Tony & Tina's Wedding" kinda thing -- where it's more about the company you're with, than the actual entertainment. I saw the play with a gaggle of girlfriends and we had a ball.
I guarantee that when Momma Mia comes to either HBO or Showtime, you'll be out of your chair or pushing the remote in under 20 minutes.
Then again, get some people over to your house, open a couple of bottles of wine, and I guess the singing gets a lot better.

ABBA Mania: With the success of the movie “Mamma Mia”, Almighty has decided to release some pretty sweet packages of their biggest artist, Abbacadabra. First up is a TRIPLE disc release titled, We Love ABBA (http://perfectbeat.com/product_info.php?products_id=5025799034819). Disc one and two are unmixed and contain radio edits and full length versions, and disc 3 is a non stop party mix... perfect for that pool party. Then they gave us special Limited Edition Bonus Discs, (http://perfectbeat.com/product_info.php?products_id=17079) which are 2 CDs packed with un-mixed full length versions and some real hard to find remixes. But the fun doesn’t stop there, they also released 2 CD singles from Abbacadbra with brand new mixes plus the original mixes. First up is ’Knowing Me Knowing You’ (http://perfectbeat.com/product_info.php?products_id=17084), which is a 6 trak remix EP including the the illusive mix by LWP (reverse the letters, you should figure out who it is!) But the big attraction is ’The Visitors’ (http://perfectbeat.com/product_info.php?products_id=17078) with NINE mixes including the dreamy mix by Wayne G. We’ve been assured by the Almighty camp that this is just the beginning. CD singles will probably continue to come all the way up to the release of the movie on DVD. Come on Dancing Queens, you know you want it.

OK, I'm obviously out of the loop because this makes little sense to me. Is Abbacadbra some kind of ABBA tribute band? Are these CD's of their ABBA remixes or are they remixed ABBA originals? And neither "LWP or "PWL" mean anything to me. And I take it Almighty has nothing to do with a disco-loving diety.
EDIT: OK, just realized that all this stuff is hyper-linked so I can probably figure it out.
