I have been asked to take over the New Leaf program at our gym. We have been in business since February 08 and have been steadily growing... especially when my other gym cancelled all group fitness classes, PT and nursery forever... we signed up 150 new members in a month!

Anyhow... our trainers have felt somewhat intimidated by the New Leaf assessment so it sits in a corner without much use. I inquired about it and now I have a green light to "run with it"...

I'm excited about it and I may be meeting with New Leaf to jump start the program but wanted to hear from those who have this at your facilities. How has it been received? How much do you charge? How much of your time does it take?

I do Marketing for a living in my day job so I'm planning on drawing from that to get the program going but I want to know the dirt on this... if there's any. I'll be reviewing some documentation this week so right now all I know is what I've seen from taking the assesment myself in Miami @ WSSC.

So spill the beans!

Thanks
Alex

Do you have a university with a physiology lab near by?

It might be a good idea to get their input before you proceed.

Alex,

You might also want to have a chat with Jennifer Klau. She had a discussion with the New Leaf folks at WSSC... I'm sure she'll share what she learned.

Any update for us on how you're doing with this?

Any update for us on how you're doing with this?

I'm just taking the pre-training (online basic info section) at the moment. Once done, I'll meet with the New Leaf people at the club and they'll walk me through the actual testing demo.

Haven't had time to contact any of the nearby schools yet... but I'd like to get New Leaf's info first...

More at 11...
Alex

iona passiac - not sure if I am spelling her last name correctly - spinning master presenter in New York City - very knowledgeable about new leaf you might want to contact her as well. I did the testing and did not have a good experience at all - I was put on a 12 week program, followed it to the T - it de-conditioned me and then after the 12 weeks my results got worse - it turns out that the man that tested me had no idea what he was doing - talk about a waste of many hours of time and money - I was very upset to say the least and it left me very confused as to where my h/r should be when I train. Really need to know what you are doing. rgds, Spunkee

just wanted to make it clear that the person that tested me was not Iona - and I wish it was. thanks, Spunkee

Hey Spunk very sorry to hear of your negative experience with someone doing your testing--that really stinks. I'm glad to know Iona was able to set things right for you. Stay positive, and keep moving in the right direction now that you are straight. :)

I did a Podcast with Jessica Christensen from New leaf that explains much. http://www.indoorcycleinstructor.com/?p=167

It's unfortunate that you didn't ask her about system accuracy and precision and the ability to properly calibrate the system. Bad numbers are probably less useful than no numbers at all.

In addition, it's been proven that workload at a given heartrate is highly variable. If you're anchoring your thresholds to HR, there's a good chance you could be way off due to variation in training and recovery state, environmental temp and humidity, hydration state, etc.

It would also be nice to know whether they've published anything related to the validity of their "thresholds". For example, most physiologists don't assign any practical significance to an RQ of 1 if that's how they're establishing anaerobic threshold.

Thanks Todd,
I'm not in any position to defend New Leaf but I can suggest listening to a well respected expert, Sally Edwards, the women who wrote the book on HR training. She is a strong proponent of New leaf's testing. Her podcast is here. (http://www.indoorcycleinstructor.com/?p=243)
Also stay tuned (best to subscribe (http://www.indoorcycleinstructor.com/wp-content/uploads/iTunes_one_click_logo.jpg)) for a new Podcast that will post ~ November 10th that features a representative from Saris. We have a long discussion about training with power and how they recommend working off of "Power Threshold" instead of "HR threshold".

Hate to say it, John but you're getting yourself in deeper.

If you're going to be an enabler for New Leaf marketing, make sure you can defend it.

If you need to fall back on an expert, make sure you've chosen one.

I have most of Sally Edwards's w/o books....and useful they are...... but I wouldn't call her a "wrote the book on..." voice of authority.
