So, my question is....how plausible is this claim to a 12,000 cals a day, junk filled diet?

Had a few discussions with folk who "find it perfectly believable" and fewer who reckon it's a bit of media flim flam.

I fall on the skeptical side......with all this shite in his belly, how would he be able to do his training sessions before the next gorge fest, for just one question.

I for one don't doubt it. He's still a kid with a very high metabolism. When I was his age I could eat like that too. While I wasn't a world-class swimmer, I was a high school and collegiate athlete. I don't eat and run on a full stomach now, but back then I did and I could do it for miles.

I was thinking that too Bob. He has youth on his side right now.

If only I knew then, what I know now about what happens when your metabolism slows down and you become less active...

This is the era of high tech swimsuits that are the result of millions of dollars of materials science research. You have training programmes where pretty much every minute of every day is designed for maximum acheivement. You've got gazillions of $$bucks in endorsements hanging on race results. Don't you think that there's someone in the training entourage charged with the responsibility of designing a nutritional plan that's geared a bit more towards elite performance than the menu he claims to be eating?

VivienneHow much more elite can Phelps's performances be? He's a multi-world record holder and the winningest career Olympian ever and he's only raced in two Olympics. At his age, he's got at least one more Olympics in him. However, if there is any area that is lacking in respect to training, it's the training of American Olympic athletes. Even in this day and age, they left to fend for themselves and are at the mercy of whatever coach they happen to fall to.
