Since no one has posted to this topic yet, I'll kick it off. Yesterday, I participated in Go Vertical Chicago, a climb up the Sears Tower benefitting the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. Without any stair specific training, I came in 6th in my age group. I did it for the cause, since between driving downtown, parking, standing in line, and finally climbing, I killed most of the morning for < 20 minutes of cardio. I've now climbed the 3 tallest buildings in Chicago for charity: Sears Tower, Hancock, and Aon. An interesting note is that Go Vertical had a climb in Colorado where they climbed Aspen Mountain, which had to be much more interesting than going round and round the staircase of the Sears Tower.

If the new forum wasn't added, I wouldn't have even bothered mentioning the climb. I was just trying to create some traffic for the Charity Rides and Events forum. It is a good cause. I try to give to cancer related charities and research whenever I can. Finishing 6th in my age group isn't that impressive when you realize there are very few people my age still alive, let alone climbing 103 flights of stairs.
Did you buy your new shoes yet?

You are hysterical and no, I haven't bought my new shoes yet but I did run further than I ever have last Saturday. I think my confidence grew by hearing from you that yes, I could do this. I also stretched out my hips afterwards and viola! no hip discomfort!
I will still investigate the shoes. I have to contact a gal who used to work with me--she was a runner and I need to find out from her where (round here) she got her shoes (I trust her recommendation).
As far as coming in 6th in your age group, I 'spose it's a good day when you're still above ground. ;)

Lori, first congratulations on both pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and as a result, running further. Second, you aren't buying a car or a condo. Good running shoes are a minimal investment that will help you achieve your goal faster and with less wear and tear. You don't need to make it more complicated than it is. I googled Pittsburgh running stores and found that they had a Fleet Feet location: http://www.fleetfeetpittsburgh.com/ . It's a nationwide store that has a good reputation for providing services like fitting you with the proper shoes. If this location is within a reasonable distance for you, I'd suggest getting over there sooner rather than later. You'll feel a huge difference running in running shoes rather than walking shoes.
