As usual, a preamble before I get to the meat....

So we have a really weird sound set up at our gym. Both the Spin and aerobics room have identical systems which basically consist of nothing more than a small flat panel on the wall (barely bigger than a light switchplate) This has 3 buttons and a display. One button given gives you either a "volume" option (self explanatory) and the other gives you a "source". You scroll up or down with the other 2 buttons and the options on the source menu are TV, computer (where the gym music comes through, often from Pandora) Spin CD and Spin ipod.

Now right at the beginning, there was only a jack for the ipod, nothing for a CD and someone mentioned we'd drop of the CD at from desk to be played from there. Obviously the impracticality of this showed up real quick and by the time I taught my first class we had a CD changer plugged in.....but just a random thing from someone's discarded home set up, I fancy. No volume control, no treble or bass etc.

Now, the mic is a nice high end Shure but on the back pac again there's no fine volume control just a 3 position switch..."off", "too loud" "too quiet". I think I must be the only instructor who uses the mic (the rest are still young enough to feel invincible) so there's no real push to improve this set up.....which is still pretty new and must've cost a bundle. If that's not all, the speakers are those junky things you have set into the ceiling.

Now the question.....is there any sort of device that can be inserted between my ipod and their system that'll control volume, enhance bass etc? Anyone any other suggestions if there's not?

A dock using the pin connector versus the earphone will modulate or equalize the volume and distortion better. Anything like this will/should work. Then you just control the volume from the stereo.

Thanks for the speedy response AC.

Will this control volume independant of what I set on the ipod?

There is no independant control for the volume for the ipod and mic.

If I have the mic set on "too quiet" I can compensate just about by turning up the master volume control and turning down the volume on my ipod. This'd work except that the music from the class next door starts coming through the speakers. I didn't believe class members when they said this was happening but sho 'nuff, that's what happens. I have no explanation beyond Bad Mojo.

Set the mic on "too loud" I have to turn the master volume down so far in order not to deafen them with my yap that I then run out of volume on my ipod.

I don't know what wuckfit thought this set up was a good idea. The music quality is a real disappointment....to me at least.

It's really noticable when I play some of the mixes from my days down on LI. One gym had a fab sound system.....the sort of thing that has track sound effects moving around the room. The set up now sounds like it's being played on a mono gramophone.

And I guess there's nothing you know of that'll let me adjust bass/treble, right??

Last question first...

Use the equalizer on the Ipod to set the desired tone. Unless it's a shuffle, then there isn't an equalizer. All Ipods from Gen-3 onward have equalizers. There are numerous settings, expirement. Also, test the sound check setting.

If you use a pin connected dock, it defeats the volume on the Ipod, but not the other controls (menu, play/pause, etc.). The equalizer is also in effect for sound output. The volume will be controlled by the stereo main control or whatever input/output control the dock is hooked into.

Unfortunately, a crappy sound system is the kryptonite for any fancy Ipod contraptions. No answer for it.

I don't know if this will work, but it's what I do in my classes. Always dock the Ipod.

How do I do all this?

Sorry if these are really dick questions but I'm way above my technological pay grade in just using the ipod rather than my CDs

I have the 16GB nano.

1. Main menu on the Ipod
2. Settings
3. EQ
4. Push and click one. Listen with the headphones until you find one you like. Push the center button to lock it.
5. Click out.

Kind of pisses me off I paid three times as much for the Apple version... :(

What generally happens with the companies like Belkin, Griffin, or other companies that make peripherals for the Ipods, is they update when the models update and closeout the older models that work perfectly fine. That includes cases, docks, portable speakers and chargers.

I buy these things along the way from buy.com or woot.com and usually give them to my nieces and nephews, but I'd be happy to add you to the gift list.

The dock connector on a iPod (called a 30 pin) is a line out as well as a power source. The dock AC brought up however, is a fire wire charger format and it will not provide power to a 4th generation Nano (the current one) a 2nd generation iPod Touch (the current one, it has the small built in speaker), the 3g phone, or the current iPod classic (120 gb).
A lot of the charger/dock solutions that are being marked down or sold as closeouts are not the new 30 config - usb power.
