My 80Gb (gen 5.5?)has been acting up. I plug it into my car stereo via the plug at the bottom and works fine. I show up for class the other night and no sound from the headphone jack--I plug the headphone jack into the back of the stereo.

I checked the following:

not locked
several headphones/stereos/plugs
volume settings appear to be fine
reset the facotoy settings
with itunes reloaded all 60gb of music

I used this as an excuse to get a new 120gb ipod (for about $100 less than the 80gb)--now what to do with the old one that still works in disc mode in my car and sync's fine with my computer. Is it worth getting fixed? will it die soon?

Any ideas or experience here?

Trade it in at my friend's website "tunecycle", which used to be "podswap". Get a shuffle or a Nano as an accessory to use.

Alex runs a reliable operation.

My understanding is an ipod has a 2 year shelf life then it needs battery replacement or.....RIP
Yikes, mine is 2 years old
many days I take mine to work, plug into my dock and no sound. So I pull the iPod off the dock, unplug dock, put iPod back in and replug dock. Sort of like a reboot. Play with it!

Batteries can be replaced, I've replaced the battery in my 40GB, 4th Gen, twice and it's still going strong. Batteries are availble online or at some electronic stores. They come with tools and directions on how to replace them. It's pretty easy.
