View Full Version : Trouble downloading to ipod...

...not MY ipod. I don't even have an ipod.

Here's the scoop - I did this "Brazil" ride for my 7-Wonders nightmare and everyone loved the music. I put the music onto some c.d.s to share with my classes. One guy called me, yes called me, the other night complaining that itunes wouldn't read the c.d. (I have Rhapsody which puts songs into MP3 format and a compatible Sansa MP3 player). He is claiming the files are all .CDA. From what I understand .cda is the 'read only' portion of the file and he's not looking deep enough for the MP3. Not knowing his computer nor his literacy, or lack thereof, I thought I'd try to simplify. I had already downloaded all the songs onto my Skydrive so I sent him there. Same problem. He can get the songs to play but he can't load them onto his ipod. I figure there are 3 possibilities (maybe 4 if you count "stupidity"):
1. He has a new version of itunes that won't work with my Rhapsody songs
2. I have a new laptop (Mother's Day gift) with a burner that is somehow not allowing c.d.s to be transferred (although the Skydrive should still have worked)
3. Maybe it's Rhapsody but I've never had a problem before

This is beyond frustrating for this poor guy (he has sent me 11 e-mails in 2 days which definitely points toward frustration) and just as frustrating for me (he has sent me 11 e-mails in 2 days and he's driving me CRAZY).

HELP PLEASE!

He should rip the CD? If its CDA its like buying a CD from the store.

Yeah, I know he should rip the c.d. and I think he's been trying. He said it works fine in Windows Media Player but it won't work in itunes. He says he had to convert the files from .cda to .mp3 from his computer, put them on a jump drive to transfer them to his wife's computer (who is the one with the ipod) so that the songs could then be transfered onto her itunes/ipod. None of this, apparently, worked. He said normally when he puts a c.d. into the c.d. drive, itunes automatically comes up and starts playing it. This didn't happen with the c.d. I gave him and nobody can figure out why.

hard to say without being there and seeing what is in the media when right clicked for its properties. after that check to see if its locked up with a certificate or "read only" which you have the power to uncheck it in your player when riping the file. If its good music, send it a long, I'll figure it out :D

Katie you certainly are putting forth a heroic effort to try and help him figure this out!

I wish I could help you figure this out. So he can play the files in Media Player but not in iTunes? And they are MP3 files?

Any music CD that one burned manually can be ripped and converted into any digital file the ripping software is set to (you have to go into the settings or properties settings to set it to whatever you want). If the CD was burned as a music CD, there is nothing to read. The tracks will have to be manually named when he inserts it before clicking the "rip or copy" button.

If he has Windows media Player set to rip as a WMA file, ITunes will not accept it. It will offer to convert it. ITunes will accept any non-protected mp3 file. Repeat, any non-protected mp3 file. Go to the ripping option in Media player, drop down box to mp3. Then uncheck and box protecting any copyrighted files.

Golden words as they relate today. Hey what version of Itunes is the latest anyway? I think we are up to 8 point 3 or something like that.:|

I feel like I'm getting somewhere now.

Is it possible that my computer inadvertantly "protected" my songs without my knowledge? I do find it odd that the songs on my Skydrive didn't work for him either.

I was hoping the ACE man would chime in here.

Sounds as if the Burning program didn't finalize the disc.. what program did you use to burn? He said normally when he puts a c.d. into the c.d. drive, itunes automatically comes up and starts playing it. This didn't happen with the c.d. I gave him and nobody can figure out why.

I burned it off of Rhapsody. Incidentally, the c.d. was downloaded successfully by someone else before it was passed on to the guy that's having problems...and, again, he also had a problem downloading the songs from my Skydrive which were uploaded directly off of my hard drive.

What's the link to your Skydrive? I'll check the music out on my iTunes. I have the latest version...
