View Full Version : Skydrive for the Riders
I get a lot of requests for the tunes I use in class. I'm sure you all do also. I think I'm going to just put up my class mixes every week on Skydrive and let them just have it, instead of explanations and discussions about CD's and Ipods and yadda-yadda-yadda.
Bad idea?

well, to call a spade a spade, it is kinda...illegal.
It's file sharing!
In the long run it's no different than giving out a cd but the latter you probably won't do very often or in multiples simply because it's time consuming on your part. But this way you're making it available to anyone, at anytime, with no benefit to the artist.

Skydrive was set up by MSN with full knowledge that files would be shared. I know this first hand, having spoken with an MSN exec. They are offering 25G of space. And I pay for it. They offer the service of "public" files for those that I let in. It is my responsibility to block the folder. I could get sued. I also gave out 15 CD's tonight to people who did a special Halloween ride with me. I had requests for 10 more. On it were songs I paid for on ITunes for $.99, Mash-ups I got for free on the Internet, and songs I paid for on gomusic.ru for $.09.
Then again, there are about 57 million people currently engaged in file sharing. And I promise to drive at or near the speed limit as a trade off.
I never expected to get the file sharing side of the picture. It's so 20th Century. I see the ethics and have full knowledge of it. But I also live in the proverbial glass house. I throw no stones in this matter.

Just say "surprise" before you go and share with certain individuals. If they were not going or intending to buy them for themselves is not illegal at this point. Also making sure it set to a certain individuals keeps it under control as far as damages ,if any, where done or are concerned. My public folder is not public. Rock on AC.

That's awfully nice of you. But will it open a can of worms? (IOW, will you be "stuck"--not sure if that's the right word, doing this for them forever? And if so, would it become more of a burden as it becomes "expected" of you?). Not sure, just bringing up points for discussion.

The most common questions are like this:
1. What was that song(s)?
2. Can I have a copy?
3. Can you transfer that?
4. Where do I get that?
No different than anyone else here I'm sure.
It actually becomes easier for me to just upload the tracks. Let them go get it. People ask to give me flash drives, IPods, etc. I can just say no, but I like the people who ride with me.
In addition, I think it adds value to my position as an innovative, relevant instructor. Gym attendance in many clubs declines gradually, but apparently every month. I like when my attendees respond favorably to my managers. Yes, even after all these years. I do like positive reinforcement.
I think it's actually less work for me, unless I need to defend myself in a courtroom.

Then you have your answer. Do it!
This has been very well received. I'm not going to recommend it if you think sharing isn't something you want to do, but if you get asked for CD's or track names and just want to make one answer good for everyone, this is a nice idea.
I see no difference doing this than any of the CD trees, Skydrive sharing or any other shared thing we've all done.

I've never been asked by a member to share a song. Nor will I file share. In the past I used Limewire. got a nasty virus that disabled Norton Anti Virus. About 150 virus' later I needed a hard drive reformat. Shop saved all my important files and I had to rebuild. Now I pay for all my music period. Keep your virus laden music!

Your viruses are from using the Limewire software. Not from the mp3 files.
You cannot attach a virus to an mp3 file. Viruses, spyware, popups and other unwanted attachments are imbedded in the software. Learning about downloading and how to file share will prevent you from what happened.
Many of us on this forum share music on Skydrive. Check previous threads. they were called CD trees a few years ago. The technology eliminates the need for it.

Way to set the record straight AC.
Way to set the record straight AC.
Most of us bought music on Beatport. Offered to each other on Skydrive. That was the sharing part here. Many of us are in each other's network and share music. No one ever reported a virus from this...did they?
The class music with members I share is bought by me. Then mixed on Mixmeister. Burned to CD. Ripped back into ITunes. Uploaded to Skydrive. Hardly possible to get a virus.
Kaaza and Limewire have ruined many computers over the last several years. I do still see people on forums recommending them or citing them as a resource. I admit to getting thousands of free files from the original Napster, and then stoipping when it was ruled illegal. Using gomusic.ru or using ReplayMusic software, that type or sourcing is really unnecessary anyway.
The nasty remark to "keep my virus laden music" pisses me off.

Let this be a recommendation to us all that if you use Lime wire or any file sharing with out caring program. That you should use a condom when you down load it and cover your mouth if you sneeze and wash your hands right after you hear the music. As far as AC's music is concerned its of the highest quality and the Government checks it and certifies its cleanliness.

AC my "keep your virus laden music comment" was NOT directed to you or any one on forum, but directed to Limewire and the problems it caused my and my daughter plus who know how many others? I used it in the past, and paid a huge price. Maybe I am ignorant in the proper procedure to DL a file or maybe I trusted Norton too much or who knows what I must have done wrong but I got massive infections. No more for me. I search and buy my own music. Period.

Just FYI:
On a scale of 1-10, I was offended by you 2.2. Megs was 4.7. Todd was 3.6. Megs is getting a 1.5 offensive penalty added on to everything he writes for 30 days as part of his double secret probation.
I think if we're going to act offended it should be quantified.

Hey thats Double jeopardy with a double blind sided test added to it! So I actually got a 3.2 with a modifier. Does that mean Todd is worse than I intially? And I don't think Paul is doing anything with out a condominium these days (censored to not offend).
Meg
If I tell you the rules, there is no point to a secret probation.
Now govern yourself accordingly.
Just to bump this up. I have now 44 members who have asked and received invitations to be in network. It's been very popular and saves me a huge amount of time.

Great advantage for your members.. But mine would be buggin for the playlist to be posted on the site not just the track numbers. Then again I am betting you get some PM's from members on here like the rest of us do beggin for a copy of our class files :) Nice job!http://www.innercycling.com/f/images/icons/icon14.gif

Cool I have wondered where that had gone. I occasionally check out what AC's up to with his music. I don't think its your best stuff (AC's Select) but is it a good barometer of what you got going on?

Whaaaaat!!!8)
I'd hate to think I peaked 2 years ago!!. Very discouraging when I'm staring down the barrel of a milestone in about 16 months!! Look in the documents folder. I've done a new mix almost every week this year.
My stuff this year has trended between dance stuff, into some interesting covers for climbing and pot luck. I did use that Digits link and it went really well. Anything new from there?
I also am a fan of Sirrius Ch. 18, The Spectrum, and if you check them out on Facebook, they list out something every week called the "Bakers Dozen". Some very interesting new rock tunes.

What about a Skydrive just for us all to exchange music with each other?

I was trying to upload some stuff to my skydrive and it wouldn't let me copy music files in... not sure if my computer was just being goofy or if they figured out that music shouldn't be allowed to be uploaded... anyone else have issues?
My dropbox is full right now, I had to load it up with music from my work computer before my last day... I have no clue how to share that, though. Anyone know?
