My gym has just started to sell these and I was wondering if anybody could weigh in on their accuracy? I know they use them on The Biggest Loser.

Actually, the Biggest loser uses a version of this called bodybugg.
I'm not sure how accurate any device that calculates your metablism can be unless it is calibrated for each individual and does not use some type of internal calculation based on age and weight.

BodyBugg has been around for many years, but has become more popular of late because of its exposure on TBL.
There is some degree of science behind the measurement of energy consumed but i'm not versed enough in the protocol to quote it. FWIW it's another measurement tool that may appeal more to some than others, but if it is an eyeopener for even one person to see how much or how litttle they "move" then it's worth it.
I must say, imho, that it does have the tendency to make someone susceptible to disordered eating/exercising behavior even more obsessive.

I checked out the bodybugg site. They say that they have been tested to be 90% accurate. So if you don't mind being off 10% go with the bodybugg. But then again, 220-age isn't the best alternative either.

I know a guy at work that uses the bodybug--he has money to burn and is the analytical type. It works for him. I would rather go with a food/activity journal and strict portion control.
I enjoy Leigh Peele's blog/podcast--she did a review here (while pimping her products)--
